Ammo recommendations for 45/70 Trapdoor
I picked up a nice refinished Springfield 1875 Trapdoor Carbine on a trade. Every part is in excellent shape and a mirror like bore. I do not think these are up to modern rounds/loads but will take lighter loads. Any recommendations?????

The trapdoors are NOT up to modern pressures at all. But that doesn't mean that they have to be relagated to the safe or display case.
Accurate Arms Powder has a whole section on TrapDoor loading. Use this link for the cartridge selection and select 45-70 Gov't Low Pressure (trapdoor) and this will give you a PDF display of loads.

You should be able to use any number of "Cowboy" loads.
Those are all lead bullets, low velocity and low pressure.
Click on the "Technical Specifications & Use"
There should be reservations if the ammo is not to be used in old, antique weapons - but you can always send a mail to Midway to doublecheck the info.

I wouldn't use any ammo marked " +P " (high pressure) or any jacketed kind of projectile in such a fine weapon.
Always go for all lead projectiled Cowboy action ammunition.
The lead projectiles doesn't allow the same pressure build up as jacketed projectiles does.
The Cowboy action ammunition is loaded according to the old specs and should be safe to use.
But always doublecheck with the seller if you can.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

BlueTic,
I own two Trapdoors and feed them Remington 45/70 Government ammo. Never a problem. It comes in two different grains. I shoot the 405 grain. The Trapdoor can handle this round with ease.
Enjoy your gun, they are fun to shoot. Everytime I go to the range, guys stand in line to fire them......[:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]

I have the same great gun. As you know, this action requires the low pressure factory equivalent loads. Mine loves the 300 grain JHP. Because of the loads required, the 300 shoots much flatter making a good hunting round. Good luck and good shooting. 0 -
