OLDER S&W 357 MAGNUM QUESTIONS

What I have here is a older Smith & Wesson DA 357 revolver.It is blued with a 6-1/2 inch pinned barrel.The front sight is pinned in place with 2 pins.It has 4 screws on the side plate and 1 in the front of the trigger guard.There is no model number.The serial number is # S9988X---The serial number on barrel,frame,and cylinder all match each other. It has a Pachmeyer one piece rubber grip that is marked Smith & Wesson N frame.It belongs to a friend of my wifes.Someone else said this is a post war II gun.The cylinder has to be turned by hand after about 10 shots being fired.It looks like someone has been firing alot of 38 specials thru it,so I am going to give it a good cleaning.I have not checked the barrel/cylinder gap yet.It also has a timing problem.It does not lock up on every chamber if cocked slowly while I apply a small amount of pressue with my thumb while cocking it. My questions are, #1 is this a N frame? #2 I would like to know the appox date of birth of the gun? #3 What is the model of this gun? #4 What would be the value of this gun in it's present condition?     Can't help you with the specific questions you asked but I think a real good cleaning, especially the action, might clear up the timing/locking problem.

If I can't improve it's current timing problem.I will recommend to it's current owner to send it back to S&W for a tune up. Thank's,

    Value, from your description I'd say $150+/-

    General Comment: They are nice old revolvers and typically bring good prices, but it sounds like someone has been tinkering with this revolver and w/o examining it it's hard to put a solid value on it. Also, the lack of the original wood grip drops the value even if all other features were fine. However, I doubt if what you have, even tuned up, has any collector interest, just a good shooter once it's been repaired ...

    Thank's for all of your replies.I was asking for a value on the gun because I may offer to buy it from the owner.I recently bought a pair of S&W model 15s in excellent condition and that has gotten me interested in S&W revolvers.I am a Ruger collecter,but once in awhile I buy other guns that also intrust me and if the price is right.

    your timing problem sounds like a worn 'hand', easy to replace by a local gunsmith (saves shipping charges $$$).
