Ruger 77 flat top ?
i recently purchased a 7mm basically cause it was mint and the first flattop i had run across...cant find much on them as far as manufacture dates or if there is any collectablity etc. any info is welcome.....

I need you to educate me a little here. I have heard the term "flat top" applied to early Blackhawk revolvers but not to a bolt action rifle. I know the model 77 came in one version that had scope mounting notches made into the bridge and receiver ring. Another version was round topped and required tradional scope mount bases to attach the rings to the rifle. What is the "flat top" you are referring to? Thanks 0 -

I was not "sharpshooting" and really thought there must have been an obscure variation of the model 77. I think the round top is pretty uncommon but have no idea as to "collectability". I had a set of Redfield bases for the round top that I took to gun shows for 3 years or so trying to sell them, finally got a dealer to buy them at an extreme discount from wholesale. 0 -
no offense taken ( am glad you ponted it out as others may not have responded who know because of the confusion ) the serial number is 73- XXXXXXX and i was wondering if that meant it was manufactured in 73 ? a buddy of mine has a 77 in 243 with the 73-xxxxxx serial number also , but it has the intregal bases in the reciever... i was wondering if there was possibly some transition going on here, but i am more of a remington type guy and am pretty clueless on ruger history ! 0 -

I cant help you out on collectability, but I searched ruger's website and found the manufacture dates. Since we only know it is 73-XXXXXXX, means it was made in 1978 or 79.
Your buddys was made in 1983 or 84.

If you have a M77PL; PL = without sights and round-top; and it has the warning statement on barrel and the s/n is after 73-11978, THEN the "Reference of Ruger Firearms V2" states ANY PL model is rare. 0 -
mine is roundtop, no sights, no warning on the barrel and the serial number indicates it was mde aprox. 900 guns earlier then the number given in the above reply...starting to get somewhere i think ! thanks for the replies so far... 0 -
Scott, I can't quite nail down a nitch for your M77PL.
The M77 round bolt without Liberty or Warning rollmark on the barrel start at about s/n 70-03698. Then at about 71-61561 to 72-42680 the 200th year Liberty guns were rollmarked on barrel, with some exceptions. Then the warning statement on barrel guns, from about 73-11978.
So... sometime after the Liberty guns, but before the Warning statement guns, BUT, in all the above variations the "PL" model is noted as being a "Scarce or Rare Variation"
