Fix the finish

Bought a nice Browning BL22, Stock has pressure marks?[xx(] Not really scratches and not real deep. Ideas on how to remove would be very helpful. Don't appear to be in the wood. Thanks

    You are saying they are impressions in the finish only right?

    Yes they appear to only be in the clear coat.

    I don't know how you would deal with that, but there are some pretty savy finish guys around here, so be patient and I imagine an answer will come.

    If it is just in the clearcoat, your safe bet is to consider it a mark of character. You can do a clearcoat repair, but you can end up with something that looks no better (or worse).

    You may first want to try just some wool and 'hard' wax to make it less obvious. (maybe try on a 'hidden' spot first) You can 'frost' a small (1/4") spot with 0000 steel wool, then wax with a very high carnauba content wax. If you are OK with that, you could attempt to fix the clear coat. Rough it up a tad, put a little of your clear coat on (maybe thinned a little), let DRY then evaluate. Repeat as necessary and maybe contour it 'flat' with some abrasives, and repeat or wax.

    In place of the wax and clearcoat, you may want to try a finish by WATCO that is a hand rub product. That may do it for you, unless the break in the clear coat is such that the WATCO could run under it. You can't 'build' the surface up, but you may make it less noticable.

    There is a gunsmith (i think in Louisiana) that has a %50 carnauba wax product that he distributes. It requires a lot of elbow grease too , but is very tough. I'll hunt for the reference.

    As I see how long this post has become, and without a picture, it drives me to again say that your best bet may be just to try to minimize it and leave it alone. Duplicating a finish on a 'spot' is one of the toughest things to get right.

    If it is just the clear coat you might try a really fine rubbing compound for gunstocks.
