45 GAP vs 45ACP
whats the differance between the two rounds,are they interchangeble,is it just some manufactors wildcat,is there a need to replace the 45 I grew up with

NOT interchangable. The GAP has a shorter case.
The GAP allows a smaller grip cross section/frame, and is leagle for sale in several countries (like Mexico) where owning firearms chambered for "military" cartridges is illegal.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Pretty nice set up. The cartridge is loaded to a higher SAAMI pressure, I believe. I don't have the data at my hand, correct me if not so.
PUBLISHED loaded ammo data indicated the GAP equals 45 ACP loadings (for practical purposes).
Per a field/range test I read, ...with the higher pressure loading the GAP can get close to 45 ACP loadings. So close that with the lighter bullets the difference is more academic than any difference in terminal ballistics/wound channels.
The tests indicated that the GAP has difficulty duplicating 45 ACP ballistics in heavier bullet weights though (above 200 grns).
Correct me guys, if I am mistaken. This is what I recall from a shooting test/article I read somewhere. The test determined that the published load data was not realized. Either the manufacturer exaggerated, used a longer test barrel than is currently available on actual handguns, etc.
I am interested in the round if offered in something other than a Glock.0 -
The 45 GAP is also offered in the Springfield XD. I had a Glock 37 and I thought it was a little too snappy for me. Had to let it go. I still may consider it in another gun. I have only shot the 185gr. and 200gr. but now they are making it in the 230gr. also. The bullet speeds on the 185 and the 200 are just a little slower then in some of the hot 45 ACP. The sole reason for the glock GAP cartridge is to be able to make a grip suitable to fit an average size hand. It was not to improve or reinvent the ACP and there is no reason to go out and buy one or rebarrel your existing pistol . The Glock pistol in 45 ACP met a lot of sales resistance because a double stack 45 ACP magazine requires a large grip ,too large for a lot of people. Glock found that if the ACP case was shortened about a .10 inch then the grip could be shortened from back to front. This made a much smaller feeling grip and hopefully would improve sales. Which is what its all about.
If the shortened case is loaded to the same pressure as the ACP then for all practical purposes its not enough difference to turn around for. If you like Glocks and you like the 45 and the regular models in 45 ACP dont fit you then its the way to go . Thats the only reason for its existence.0 -
More specifically, the only reason for the .45 GAP was to be able to fit a .45 diameter round in a 9mm/.40s&w size frame. Other than that, it's ballistic performance is identical to the .45acp.

Unless you plan to reload .45 GAP, you will spend a lot more on AMMO... Stay with the ACP

I would stick with 45 ACP. Were I live, I have not been to one single gun store that is carring 45 Gap ammo. They carry the guns, but not the ammo. Lets say you were in a tight spot, or up in no mans land
and you dropped all of your bullets in the toilet and needed to run to the local gun store and buy more. I will bet they don't carry 45Gap

glock just wanted to name a bullet after themselves ,S&W has many ,now the .357sig .480 ruger etc,among other manufacturers that have followed0 -
You got that right. But americans love to over complicate things and have alot to choose from. Hence the 357 sig, 45gap. [;)]

You know what sucks ?
People who love glocks usually dog the .45 ,and prefer the .40 or 9mm{most I have met anyway},but now have a new attitude ,"the 45 gap is equal to the .45" ,and now brag about glocks accomplishment ,when it was inferior before
It is not like the really invented something ,it is a .45 short in an over pressured case
And the same person wouldn't carry a .38+p because it is inferior to the .357 magnum0 -
I agree w/ 1911A1. This seems to be a solution to a non-existant problem. The .40 S&W seems to be quite adequate for my purposes. I have a small hand and carry a single stack. 8+1 and an additional mag. I tend to believe that hi-caps encourage poor marksmanship. If I runout of ammo I am running anyway. The GAP also fails the Wal-Mart test as well.
