What makes APIT tick? how to read color codes?
Thought I'd pick up some .50 BMG APIT ammo and bullets while they're still available. Decent prices here on GB. Should go up in value.
I'm guessing that there is Magnesium under the jacket and ignition and friction make them light up.
The loaded ammo looks like L C 9 1. Lake City 1991? Has a red and silver stripe around the tip.
The bullets have a silver stripe. How does this read?
Scary looking at a round against a 30/06, which I understand that J.B. designed it around. Once I nail down my next contract I'm sending Anzio Ironworks a check for the Anzio 50. Unfortunately no iron sights, but I should have enough for a scope by the time it's built.

Blckhrn, the red over silver is standard US marking for the APIT. Silver alone is API. The actual chemical composition of the loadings varies enormously with the era and nation. Frankly I don't know the specs for current issue loadings, but most incendiaries involve white phosphorus or a compound containing that chemical. Some tracer compounds have incendiary capability of their own, also. The bullet designs can be quite complex, in fact. If you post an inquiry on the IAA site rufe noted, someone more knowledgeable than I may be able to give you more specific data.
