the differance between .45 acp and .45 Colt
i am looking at a witness in a 9 mm but i
would like a .45

  45ACP is a rimless cartridge designed to operate in semi-automatic pistols.
  45Colt is a rimmed cartridge designed to operate in revolvers.
  
  The 45Colt was origionaly a blackpowder cartridge and was designed shortly after the Civil War, while the 45ACP was designed just before WW-1 (for the colt 1911 Pistol).
  
  While there are a couple revolvers that will fire the 45ACP (with special "moon" clips, and at least 1 semi-auto pistol that will fire the 45Colt, the above statements will hold true 99+% of the time.

  .45 Colt (also called .45 Long Colt) was originally designed for the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army revolver.
  
  .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) was designed for the Colt .45 Automatic Pistol (also known as the Colt Covernment Model, Model 1911 and Model 1911A1).
  
  .45 Colt has a rimmed case, and is usually found in revolvers only.
  
  .45 ACP has a rimless case (somewhat shorter than .45 Colt) and was designed for automatic pistols, but can be used in some revolvers using half-moon clips.
  
  .45 Colt, having a larger case, is a bit more powerful than .45ACP, but both are well-proven man-stoppers, and excellent defensive rounds.
