Mod 700 Rem. barrel - gunsmith question
Sorry if this is a duplicate post. Don't know what happened to the other one. Can a mod.700 Rem. barrel shank be re threaded to fit a mod.98 Mauser LR receiver?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
The easy answer is no you can't. The Mauser LR 98 threaded shank is 1.100" x 12 TPI. The Remington is 1.062 x 16 TPI. The shank area in front of the threads on a factory Remington is radius tapered too short to even cut the threads off and re-thread.
It has been done for Small Ring Mausers but my question would be why waste the time and money on a used factory barrel? Unless you can provide the labor yourself, the cost to re-thread and chamber is too high. Get a good barrel and put your money into it and enjoy it for the rest of your life.

like non... said above unless the remington is a 'heavey contour' you aren't going to have enought 'meat' to rethread. i'v put some of these on small ring mausers and turkish m-98's. but unless you got a great deal on a new 'take-off' barrel it is better to spend a little extra for a new barrel. 0 -
Why not get a Shilen from Brownell's? Already threaded and short chambered, plut 26 inches. We did that on an '09 Arg. in .270, left it 26 inches, and that thing shoots better than most rifles we've seen.

A careful bidder can get a Rem. takeoff barrel and get it installed on a small ring for less than most barrels cost. Plus, if the smith is careful you won't have to spend $75 on a blue job.
