    I'm not familiar with this brand of ammo. However, my observation of different explosive/incendiary rounds in the past leads me to believe that they can cause far more problems than any of us can imagine. That's both from a safety & a legal perspective. (Remember the Dragon's Breath shotshells?)

    There is no conceivable reason for owning this kind of ammo; "neat ideas" can end up costing you your freedom.

    I tested some of the Velet ammo about 20+ years ago. As Mark mentioned the performance was marginal. I fired both .357 and .45 cal. They only seemed to "go off" on hard surfaces, and even then they were not anything to get excited about.

    Upon close inspection it appeared the bullets had pistol primers inserted in the hollow point. I dont know if any other explosive material was inside the point of the bullet as I was not about to disect it to try to find out.

    Going way back into memory lane, in the late '70's I used to sell as part of our regular stock some cartridges packaged ten to a box in foam cut-off insert. The brand name was, (I think not sure) "Exploder". It utilized "Super-Vel" cases and parent JHP ammo to which the "hollow point" had been additionally hollowed and a small charge of very fast burning powder was inserted. This was topped with a small primer, coated in yellow paint.

    I did a bit of testing with them in various calibers including .380ACP, 9mm., 38 Spl., 45ACP and 44 Mag. They were fired at solid plywood, watermelons, a big "ham", phone books. The results were terrible. They never performed any better or different than their "host" Super-Vel cartridges, which were known for being good to begin with. I got rid of them all then, because they were worthless and a liability to have around.

    Some time after, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe they were reclassified by the BATF as "destructive devices" and illegal to manufacture or distribute to the general "civilian" public.

    I do not know if these "red tipped" Velex is the same or similar ammo, or just something with a non-explosive "expanding plug" rather than a frangible exploding head (explosive chemical compound filled).

    Personnally, I would steer away from them. Not worth the hassle. If you are a collector and must have them, then you should check with our friends at the BATFE and check for legality and guidelines.
