Which AK47 to buy?
I need some help from the AK gods out there.
I wanna know what AK is a good one to buy? I saw an Arsenal,INC SLR101 and a Romy WASR both in 7.62x39. The Arsenal's are going for about 490.00 and the Romy about 300.00. Which one would be a better rifle in the field. Are there any other brand out there worth looking at and pricing?

There's a small group of us at work that are interested in getting AK47's but we're not sure which one to buy. We hear the milled receiver & chromed barrel are better than the stamped receiver and plain barrel. Then, there's the ones that will accept double stack mags and ones that won't; and there's a single stock with thumbhole, and two piece stocks with pistol grips. Finally, we have a choice of getting one made in this country by either relocated Europeans or getting kit guns.
Help. We're looking for a good, reliable AK that will fire the 7.62 X 39 round, and will accept virtually any mag made for this type of rifle. Of course, it has to be legal to own and use. Don't care if it can accept a bayonet or grenade launcher. Looking for something that's fun and won't break our wallets but will be reliable at the same time.
Any suggestions?

I like the SAR1 in 7.62x39 and the SAR3 in 5.56. [8D]

All I can tell you is that I had an SAR1 and it was OK, but a little on the junky side. When that cartridge explodes (inside the gun) inches from my face I want a little more quality between me and the ignition. Unfortunately, to get a good AK you are going to have to pay more than 3 or 4 hundred dollars. I eventually sold it and picked up a EA Ar-15. It is more accurate but also more finicky with ammo and tends to jam more. I will say that the SAR1 did not have much of a problem accepting all kinds of ammo. I guess the old adage is still true, that "you get what you pay for". For me, the SAR1 is like riding on bald tires. Sorry, just one man's opinion.

ok, for a nice milled receiver ak nice the ones from Arsenal inc. you will pay TOP dollar, yeah sure they might be really well made, but i think that the Romanian WASR-10 hi-cap is the best deal on an AK, the stamped receivers are plenty strong and in my experience the quality is not that bad, i have never had a problem with either of mine and would highly recommend them since you can get a new one with the bayo lug and threaded barrel for around $350. you dont need a real SAR-1 the only difference is that the magwell on the WASRs started out as a single stack only, but was converted by Century arms to accept hi-caps, some people say this was not correctly done, i cant say that i have ever had a problem with mine, just ask to check it out before you buy it, stick a mag in and see how much it wobbles, if its too much for you spend around $500 and get a "real" SAR-1 , but then you wont get the threaded barrel or bayo lug.

Stamped or Milled, none were for an 'accurate' weapon. The goal was to function under crappy conditions. Hokkmike has a real concern, but a 'cato' ignition will probably not be due to a stamped or milled piece, and you are still in a spot to catch the bad stuff from it.
I have my favorites, but everyone does. I don't care for some of the 'black paint' versions, but they do sell.
A 'good one' is one that you like, has a good fit, finish, and function by AK standards and did not cost you double the fair price.
Above all, a good one is one you enjoy.

good luck finding an original Russian AK-47. i dont think they ever even made a semiauto AK47. go with a romanian.

My thinking, first option is to by a chicom rifle that has been reduced in price as the result of pressure from the ban lifting.
Second option, buy a MAK-90 and add enough US parts to make it legal to accept folding stocks and/or pistol grips, with the other goodies. You get that world famous Chicom quality and the assault features to boot, for around $500. If you think I'm kidding about Chicom quality, you are right. The finish is third world, even on the best of them, but they have a floating firing pin and function beautifully.
Third option, spend a bit more and by a NEW VEPER, with the assault goodies, and one which will probably retain it's value as a collector's piece.
Forth option, just buy an AK and don't worry about what kind it is, they all go bang under adverse conditions. You might have to adjust for trigger slap, though...

romanians are good ,but personally im a vector ,and bulgarian fan ,the ak's produced by www.globaltradews.com are also worth looking into ...but why not go to www.ak-47.net for a real education ,before making a buy
