Help building an 8mm-06
I have just gotten my model 98 large ring Mauser, back from the gunsmith. He rechambered a 8mm to 8mm-06 for me and checked headspacing. I have bought RCBS dies and will start making ammo, when I am able to find a sporter stock for it. I need help in this I cannot find a stock that has the inletting for a step down military barrel. I don't know if this is something I have to do myself or if I can buy one already made. The stocks I see online don't mention the step down features. Do I assume the stock is not available in synthetic? I like to not have to worry about wood. I don't want to drill and tap for optics till I get the stock situated. Has anyone else done this? I know it was done regularly in the 50's and 60's when 8mm ammo was harder to find. I don't need this rifle for anything but as a project, and maybe a backup gun to my 300 win mag for elk. I like what I have seen ballistic wise on paper.

Am I correct in understanding that you want synthetic rather then wood? If so one of the ok, not great, plastic injection is made by Butler Creek and is sold thru the Natchez catalog or at their online site. They used to go for about $100 and they come setup for the step barrel. Midway has one also. What I don't like about them is that the forestocks flex and give a lousy bedding to metal contact, ie you can pull the stock a 1/4" away from the barrel at the tip. When I've made one in the past and I wanted as light and handy a rifle as I could get, I ended up using an original milspec stock and recut it to a sporter configuration. You have to agree that 50 year old wood is about as dry and light as it will get. Email me and I'll shoot you a couple of pics if you want. Personally I really like the 8-06 as a backup hunting rifle. I never get much money into one and so if it gets stolen out of a deer camp I haven't lost a wad. Better yet is that the jerk who takes it will likely try to shoot standard 8x57 thru it which will likely be exciting. 8-06 is a great wildcat and you should have a fine time getting it together. My favorite load is a 200g Speer hot core bullet on top of a charge of IMR4320. This gets me about 2650fps out of a 22" barrel, which makes this a serious pig, bear and other larger game cartridge. 0 -
One other suggestion, cut the last 1/2" to 1" off the end and recrown the barrel. These milspec barrels have mostly been cleaned from the muzzle and so there can be uneven wear from rod rub which can throw slugs all over the target. By removing the front 1/2" or so you can get good rifling all the way out to the end. 0
