Remington uses a date code.
Look on the left side of the barrel,just in front of the reciever.
You should find a 2 or 3 digit code.With that,I/We can date your Remington.
As far as swapping barrels,I'm not sure,but someone will be along shortly that knows.

The LT and LW barrels will NOT fit your large receiver. Look on the GB auction for barrels you can use. I shoot a Left Hand 20 ga. and found a barrel there. 0 -
I believe the 20 gauge was made on the large frame until the mid 60's -- easy way to tell if a barrel will fit on your frame is to measure the inside of the magazine tube ring, it must be 1" inside dia. ,,,,, newer 20ga. barrels have a ring that measures about 3/4" inside dia.

NYGuns - You have a large frame 20 if a quarter (25-cent coin) will pass through the magazine ring that is welded to your barrel. If so you can only mount a similar replacement barrel on your gun. The later LW's will not interchange - the quarter will not pass through their magazine rings.
I too am looking for a real nice open choke barrel for my older 20 ga - I have a VR full choke barrel on a gun s/n S972562X. My barrel is practically mint - 98% - if you have a modified or IC barrel you're looking to swap. Good luck. Tim

gskyhawk, et al - I've been off for a few days. I do not know what "(LR)" means in the 870's description, but for my pre-LW 20 ga Wingmaster, I would probably pay 40% - 50% more for a barrel choked modified or improved cylinder than I would for the full choked barrel, assuming all other variables are equivalent. I saw two fellas at the Biloxi gun show last week who had barrels - both had decent 20 ga barrels, ribbed and not ribbed, open choke, but all with the smaller magazine tube ring.
Edited Line: The plain barrel last week was a full choke barrel and I am not certain now whether it was the 1" or the 3/4" ring.

If you have the Standard frame(20ga. built on a 12ga frame) it was discontinued in '77.

All - Before Capt Kirk puts the lid on this one:
nyguns - I don't generally concern myself with date of manufacture per se, but if I'm reading my "Bluebook" serialization appendix correctly, it looks like your Remington serial number translates to a manufacture date of December 1979. (V = 1979 X = December) Could that be? Someone with better reference material may give you a more reliable and correct answer.
gskyhawk - I wouldn't think any standard field 870 shotgun could be counted as rare. I bought mine used in 1975 or 1976 expressly for a September teal hunt. I bought the nicest of three or four that were for sale in a small shop in a small town south of Lafayette. There were probably six or eight 870's - mostly 12 ga - carried on those rice field hunts. I bought mine because coworkers gave it high marks for reliability and ease of take-down to clean. I say all this as I ponder rarity. With all the 870's in Vermillion Parish then, I'd guess one could get a real nice gun for between $150.00 and $200.00
The item that I've found to be a little scarce is a real nice barrel, preferably VR, preferably modified choke (but imp cyl would be okay), for that large ring, circa 1969 20 ga Wingmaster. I see A-5 barrels at all the shows, in all gauges and condition, Jap and Belgian, fixed choke and Invector. In the case of the Remington barrel, I don't think it is rarity but just a plain lack of demand that keeps them off the seller racks. I'm hoping its the latter, in which case when I do run across one it may be had fairly inexpensively. I'm guessing its kinda like the Browning B2000 barrel in 2-3/4", VR, modified choke, real clean I bought a couple of years ago for less than $70.00. There are lots of shooters around here anymore, including some in my family, that have become convinced that they just can't kill a duck without a 10 or 12 ga gun and 3" Magnum or 3-1/2" Magnum shells.
All that said, I do not believe either of us have a rarity in our 870's. They were cranked out by the car load. They are wonderful shotguns, durable and reliable, and were probably as much a standard shotgun as the Winchester 30'30 was a deer rifle in south Louisiana.
Anybody could afford one. Everybody had one. And lots still do.

timbroman: thanks the reason i asked was because I've seen vent rib barrels selling on ebay in the $150-175 range , but those where either mod or full choke , i don't believe I've ever seen one like mine for sell any where , so I was wondering if it was harder to come by 0
