S&W 10mm Extraction problem?
I have an 1006 that about 1 in 5 rounds will fail to extract the case fully. Upon firing, the extractor pulls the fired case half way out of the chamber. the slide continues rearward and picks up a live round, jamming it forward into the fron t of the magazine since it can't go up th ramp due to the fired case. the extractor looks good, and has good tension. I can put one of the dented cases back in the chamber and the extractor will put it out, although it takes a great deal of force on my part. Any ideas?

Hello even thou you might clean the bore the bore brush might be too small to really clean the chamber . The first thing I would try is to take a shotgun brush or larger pistol brush and really clean the chamber . You did not state what ammo you were useing but some cheap ammo is steel case and this tries to stick to the chamber.You say that the case is dented Is it dented or is there a burr in the chamber?. 0 -
Never seen steel 10mm ammo. this is good ammo, 4 different handloads, a box of factory 180 fmj, and a box of federal HP's. Chamber is clean. The dents are caused by the next round trying to chamber, hitting the empty brass in the side.

My 1076'll spit out and don't have any problems like that. When I first picked her up I changed out all the major springs (including the extractor spring) with wolff. As for "steel case" ammo Blazer is aluminum and it does look like bare steel. 0 -
I understand you to say that the extractor pulls the case half out of the chamber then releases the empty, slide continues to the rear, strips the next round out of the magazine and jams it against the empty half out of the chamber.
I would look that extractor over real close. Look also at all your empties. Any difference in the extractor mark on the rims? A dirty chamber is possible but would think it would do it a lot more than once in 5. Might the magazine have anything to do with it? Tried a different magazine? My guess would be a small piece of something (probably brass or aluminum) causing the extractor to fail to get a proper grip on the rim.

I had this problem with my 1006 using federal nickel cases. My determination was that the rim was a tad thick and the extractor had trouble grabbing it. Have not had this problem with any other ammo. I typically use either handloads with Win. or Rem. brass or Remington UMC fatory 180 gr. FMC (nickel cases). I recommend the UMC stuff, as it is relatively inexpensive (around $13-$15 per box of 50) and provides about 70% of full power (my chrono shows velocities that equate ~510 FPE). So these loads are hot enough to cycle most 10mm guns without being as abusive as full-power ammo. Also, my Kimber will print 1-hole 50 ft. groups with the UMC rounds, so it is plenty accurate.

The chamber looked good, but I polished it a little anyway with some 600 grit wrapped arround a dowel. I then removed the extractor and took a couple .001's off of the back with a file in case the rims were too thick, polished the recess in the slide where the extractor goes.
I shot 3 mags through it with no problems. Would have shot more but I hate loosing th ebrass in the snow.

Everybody has mentioned the "extractor", but nobody has mentioned the "EJECTOR".
How is the condition of the ejector? After the extractor pulls out the empty the "ejector" kicks it out, and if it doesn't it could remain in the chamber area causing jams such as yours?
