single shot pistol f or e? wesson oct 25 1859
I will admit i know very little about guns but this gun has been in my family for years and i tryed to find some history on it and i cant seem to come up with any thing close to this gun.
Its markings on top of barrel read F. WESSON PATENTED OCT.25,1859
I would like to know if it is a smith and wesson or if its wesson only and is it the same wesson of smith and wesson
Also it looks like a stamping error but the W and E are apart a little
so it could read F.W ESSON AND THE F may be an E not sure just guessing F

Frank Wesson was Daniel Wesson's (of Smith & Wesson fame) younger brother.
It appears that you have a First type (a.k.a. Model 1859) single shot pistol, and these were made in two sizes; Small Frame in .22 rimfire caliber, and Medium Frame in .30 or 32 rimfire caliber. The Small Frame is always found with a bronze frame, while the Medium Frame is most often found with an iron frame. Different barrel lengths were made for each type.
