Identify and value a Colt Woodsman please

Here is what I saw:

Colt Woodsman, 4.5" barrel, serial #63xx-S, Coltmaster adjustable sights, blond grip panels (original?), thumb button mag release, some blue wear around muzzle, rifleing looked good, and minor scratches on the slide. Not a collector, but definitely a shooter. They are asking $349.

Can someone give me some history/age/what it is? Fair price? Are they a pain to disassemble for cleaning?

I think the serial number would date it to 1948. Sounds like a pretty good buy to me.

Are the "BLONDE" plastic grips original?

How do you take the slide off? I know that button on top is used, but how?

Second series, 1948 is correct. The price is not a bargain, but pretty fair if as described. The stocks should be Coltswood, not wood. Coltswood is a bakelite like plastic product, wood-like in appearance and usually blondish. Inatially wood grain color, later brown.

Vepr, remove the grips and look for very fine print inside the panels. See if they say W.Murad "The Pointer".

I had a friend who was a cost engineer for Colt. Some production genius decided to use up the huge number of .45 magazines release buttons by incorporporating them into the post war Woodsmens. After a short time, my friend pointed out that the milling operation to install them cost 2 1/2 times what the parts they were using up cost and they went back to the bottom release.

I admit to being color blind, but I would never describe Coltwood as being blond. They sound more like Frazite replacements.

I don't think the shop will let me remove the grips. Is this your pistol? It's at shop in the Portland Metro area.

Vepr, not mine, just curious if it had Murad grips on it. Murad was a common replacement grip on the Woodsman and High Standard pistols. Long defunct, they bring a high price now. Did it look like these?

As someone has said, $349 isn't a bad price, but with non-original grips, it's no bargain. You might be able to find originals on ebay. Incidentally, unless you need to replace a broken part, there's no need to disassemble a Woodsman. They can present problems in reassembly that are frustrating. Just regular cleaning is all it needs. -Asa

The grips are probably those Murad ones, if I can remember right. The color definitely looks the same. I only handled the pistol for about 10 minutes.

Do the Murad grips increase the value or justify the price?
