Length of barrel for Ruger 10/22 ???
Ok,....you seen my question before:
I'm planning to buy a Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic LR rifle but I don't know what length of barrel to choose. Options are standard 18 1/2" barrel or 20" or even 22" barrel. I know that longer barrel means more precise rifle (that's why bull barrels are all 20" long, isn't it?) but I really need advice from you experts guys with lot of expirience.
I will use rifle for target practice but also for plinking and very probavly for small game. Don't laught, that is fun for me. I have intetntion to put scope on to make it even more precise.
Please, guys, what Ruger 10/22 to choose: standard 18 1/2" barrel or 20" or one with 22" barrel and why?
but what surprise me is that I constanly getting pro and con answers. If 18 1/2 inch barrel is the best then:
1. WHY Ruger producing longer barrel models - to make worse rifles
2. WHY every bull barrel is at least 20 inch long -to lower the quality of the shot??
And then questions what I will be use that rifle? For plinking and small game hunting. Thats why I am interesting in accuracy of the shot and in maximum speed of a bullet in order to make it more deadly to rabbits.
So, in order to achieve this please, guys, what Ruger 10/22 to choose: standard 18 1/2" barrel or 20" or one with 22" barrel and why?

Personaly,if it were me,I'd start out w/the standard carbine(18.5").
Why?
Because w/all the accessories available to make it "better",you can always add to it as you find the areas that you feel need improvement.
For what you state that you want to use it for,any off-the-rack 10/22 will usually shoot better than the person holdin' it and the starting price($150+/-)gives you a lot of room to make it "better" later.[;)]

Ruger mnakes what the market askes for. The standard 18.5 inch barrel will work very well for what you intend it to do. If you like the look of one of the others, ss vs carbon steal or the balance of one vs the other suits you then go with it. My 2 cents [8D]

Just to streight one thing up - I don't want to upgrade it with longer barrel - in WalMart you can choose Ruger basic model with 3 different lengths of barrel, so I don't know which one to buy. 0 -
I say again if Wally Worls has all three. Pick them up. Hold them. Bring them to your shoulder and see whaich one fits you best in this reguard. They will all perform the tasks you have out lined the same. Maybe you could consider buying more than one. [8D]

All the powder of the "average" .22 LR round is burned up in about the first 14" of barrel, so longer barrels won't add any velocity.
The next 2" are just there to make it legal. It has to be 16" at a minimum or it is a short barrelled rifle.
Anything further is personal preference. You may be going for looks, balance, handling, or sight radius, but it is just a matter of options and choices.

Anchutz 1913 International free style match rifles, probably the most accurate .22 rifle on earth, have a 27.12" bull barrel. I have always prefered a long barrel for offhand shooting, it seems to balance better for me.
My guess is that world class shooters would be way more concerned about accuracy than MV.0 -
Is hyper velocity ammo needs longer barrel than standard 18 1/2?

the question maybe better answerd by asking what you are going to use for sites, open site w/ no up-grades mite be better w/ the longer barrel, on the other hand if your going to use a scope, it mite be better w/ the shortest barrel, as far as hyper ammo, they may not shoot better in any barrel. every barrel will need to tested for what it likes best you did get some very good answers above, but what is best for you now...? only you 'no. 'mentioned' was that after 14.5" the .22 actually slows down due to friction , the bridge to cross... also you should know the rate of twist in the barrel your buying - [depends on the make ] more twist... will like a lighter bullet like 40grs., less twist.... will like the heavier 55-60gr... an have a further range ...good luck with your pick [:)]
