Winchester stain?

Can anyone tell me if the old winchester stocks (ie model 42,37 12) used a stain in the mixture. I am trying to take out a bad spot in a 42 stock and cant get the new finish to match with the old oil finish, even after I let it darken naturally for a week or longer.

  Yes, Winchester used a red tint stain formula (mixed it right in with the oil for guns with oil finished stocks) on nearly all of the stocks they ever made.
