Free Floating / Bedding a Savage Stock
Should the barrel nut on a Savage stock be free floating in a stock also??
My barrel is, but my barrel nut is not on my 10FP LE2 and plastic stock

PB,
Do youself a favor and dump the stock. I have the same exact gun and dumped the stock and it shoots a lot more consistant. You can pick up a CHOATE Ultimate Varmit for about 175.00, used for even cheaper. Only problem with the stock is, either you LOVE them like I do or HATE them with a passion like others.
In the Choate UVS the barrel nut does free float.

I don't think that the barrel nut makes any difference. I'm not sure, but that is my guess. The Choate is also a nice stock.

When I glas bed a Savage I set it on a pad of acra-gel that runs from the rear of the action recess(where the magazine box starts) to about 2 inches in front of the action nut.The nut is not free floated. this locks it in very tight ,which is what you are trying to do. The problem comes in with this because the gel flows into the grooves in the nut and the grooves on the sides of the nut being full of bedding compound that is locked to the inside of the stock locks the whole thing together . The solution is to to thoroughly degrease the nut and fill the grooves with melted wax from a burning candle. let it drip into the grooves ,after it hardens (cools) good trim any overflow smooth with a razor blade. This gives you a smooth round lock nut. apply the release agent as normally done right over the wax. after its bedded and set up it will pop out like any other. clean the wax out put it together and you have it tightly bedded as it should be. Ive used this method on quite a few and it alweays improves accuracy a lot.
Good luck0
