Browning A5 Help!
First of all, I know very little about the workings of a semi-auto shotgun. I cannot get the the breech block to open on a Browning A5. What am I doing wrong?

There are two ways to get the breech block to slide open... the recommended way is to simply pull the lever located on the upper right-hand side of the receiver to the rear. If the gun is empty, the breech bolt will remain locked to the rear. The other method is to push/pull the barrel to the rear (against the recoil spring). I do not recommend doing that unless you positively know the the gun is empty.

As Bert so aptly stated... BE VERY CAREFUL OF THIS ONE!
1. It's entirely possible that the gun is loaded and in battery. If so, the hammer is cocked and the safety is the only thing between you and a discharge.
2. It's also possible that you've encountered a jam and misfire. In this case you have a hammer alerady dropped on a questionable round. The problem here is that we don't know the status of the misfire and the outcome of unjamming will depend on extreem care... No AD's needed here!
Assuming the bolt is fully forward and locked, you won't be able to remove the barrel. Don't try as it will just complicate matters. BE SAFE. TREAT THIS GUN AS IF LOADED!
In your case I can only suggest the enlistment of professional help for safety and piece of mind. I offer this advice because I doubt any one of us would wish to forward information that could possibly cause injury.
A good smith will first be determined if there's a load in place. If the chamber is empty, then you have a purely mechanical problem which presents no danger to anyone. You'll be dealing with a worn or broken component... And that will be the best of news! If the chamber is found to be loaded, then your professional will deal with the situation.
