Douglas Barrel
My dad is getting a custom gun made and the bid that was sent in is $685 for a douglas air gauged barrel 6mm barrel with a 6 groove 1/10 twist. I also am looking at building a custom gun and went onto douglas's website and they are in the $250 price range. I am wandering if there is something i am missing, if he is getting jipped or why the barrel that he gat quoted is so much higher. Have looked all over the net and have found no answers. Any posable answers would be greatly apreciated.

the prices you are seeing are for the barrel "blanks" which means they have not been chambered, threaded, or crowned and finish polished/blasted. The additional labor cost is what drives up the finished price. That still seems high to me though, unless a muzzle break is included in the deal. And for that price, I would expect a Douglas XX grade blank in Stainless Steel to be supplied.

I never saw a Douglas barrel that cost that much!!!! so maybe the price quoted was for completing the rifle on his action ??????????

Barrels (just a piece of tube with rifling in it) run 100-350, depending on maker, quality and material
Thread, chamber crown and install on receiver labor 125-250
Finish $?
Different conture? Don't forget to add labor for reworking the barrel channel.

Kind of like asking why the guy at the local garage wants $2000 to rebuild your engine, when you know that the rings, bearings, and gaskets only cost $250.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Labor is is added latter and should not be in the cost of the barrel. Here is the website to douglas's price list and for 218 i can get a # 2 barrel get it xx tested for $10 and air gaged for $35. and this if for a Turned, Threaded chambered, cut to length crowned and poplished. My dad does not like SS and i think he told the gun smith no SS of i am hopeing he did or he is not going to get what he thinks he is getting. LOL Also any one know much about a 240 wby mag? thinking about getting one and not another 6mm. 0 -
The 240 IS a screamer, but brass is a bummer to come by! The 240 had a reputaion as a barrel-killer...but so do most other high velocity rounds. If you shoot them prudently, almost any round will last several thousand high intensity firings. If this were not true, and barrel technology had not come as far as it has in the last 25 years or so, the 220 Swift would not be enjoying the success is again is!

Seems high to me also. I had a rifle rebarreled and blued for much less than that, including everything. Kinda sounds like the builder is tacking his profit onto the Douglas barrel at a pretty handsome rate. 0 -
Look at Hart rifle barrels. They are stainless. IMHO the best you can buy.
