There seems to be better and much more powerfull ammo today, whe shooting from pistols I notice that almost every brand seems to have a different color when fired? I tried about five different types of 22 mag in my revolver and some were blue-white others were an orange was it the short barrell or what? even some of the same brands were of a different color? as in the Winchester, the Dynapoint and Super X seemed completely different, then in the 38 the Silvertip ammo was a blue white color? on some ballastic tests through some wet phone books there was a big difference in results?????????? I assume you mean .17hmr!?!.....Only if the rifle is chambered for it!...You CANNOT fire a .17hmr in a rifle chambered for a .22 short,long or long-rifle....

I'LL ASSUME YOU MEAN 'CAN I FIRE A .17 MACH 2 IN AN UNALTERED 10/22'. NO, YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE BARREL AND RECOIL SPRING AND MAYBE THE BOLT. ( THE .17 MACH 2 IS A NECKED DOWN .22 STINGER AS OPPOSED TO A .17 HRM) 0 -

There are two 17 caliber rimfires currently on the market - the 17HMR which is basically a 22 magnum necked down to .17-inches and the brand new 17HM2/17MII/17Mach2 which is essentially a 22LR necked down to .17-inches. Both cartidges shot the same 17 caliber bullet.
I believe what you are asking is: Can the 17Mach2 be fired in a an unmodified 22LR Ruger 10/22.

As an update, Bulter Creek and Clark Custom are now offering 17M2 barrels. However, just as important as the adding a 17M2 barrel to modify the 10/22, a new heavy bolt must also be added. All the aftermarket barrel manufacturers have a statement with the 17 barrels warning users to also add an aftermarket bolt. There is too much energy in the 17M2 for the stock Ruger action to handle and the rifle will do nasty things. Please read the link.
The aftermarket bolt adds mass which cycles the action properly for the 10/22 and balances the physics (remember, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction).
The most reasonably priced bolts I have seen come from E.A. Brown Company:

I haven't tried one of them yet. Volquartsen also makes an aftermarket bolt and their price is about $200.00.
