    I believe that 540 has been discontinued.

    great...there goes my favorite 28ga load! guys, catch me up to present, what took 540's place that equals its characteristics?

    I'm not sure what took 540's place, but you might want to look at trying Unique or Herco for the 28.
    I use about 13 grs of Unique nice load,less felt recoil and hulls last much longer. Friends of mine use Herco not sure exactly how much though.

    Just checked the Alliant reloading manul and the Winchester. Herco, 2400, Red Dot, [8D]296 and Unique are are still around.

    I am a heavy user of 2400, WST, and Bullseye and have burned much Red Dot in the recent past.

    The rest I don't know about.

    my loads were precise in all ga's. they had to be exact 1200fps.
    i used:
    1oz 12ga = red dot
    1 1/8oz 12ga = 700x
    1oz 16ga = herco
    7/8oz 20ga = unique
    3/4oz 28ga = 540
    1/2oz 410 = 296 or 2400

    for same hole accuracy out of my win m-54 22 hornet i use 2400.

    for 45 TCJ 230 i use unique.

    so...all my bases are covered. i guess i'll have to go back to my alternate loads on 28ga. its just after 20 years, you get so use to a load and you hate to change.

    btw...........is 7625 still around? it was so dirty but worked well.

    how about HS7?

    A few years ago when Winchester stopped 540 & 571 it was pointed out that the burning characterisitics of Hodgdon HS6 & HS7 are the same- but I forget which one matches which one. I suppose I should figure it out before I use up the remainder of my 8lb cans of 540 & 571.

    Back in the 80's I worked at a local custom ammo loading shop. We used HP38 in 100 pound barrels. I was amazed to see that the cardboard barrel was spray painted to cover up a WW231 sticker. A HP38 sticker was placed over it. Seems that Hodgen used other powders with their name on it, it is a common practice in the powder industry.

    I am sure that there is a very close approximation to any discontinued powder available. We just need to search to find it.

    roger that. HS6 = 540. i assume all wts and measures are the same on a mec bushing chart? hows cost compared to 540? do they still sell the stuf in 3 lb cans?
