Need some SA 1911 GI help please...

feeds and fires just fine until last round...shooting Speer Gold Dots, the very last shell casing will either not extract or is slammed in there and takes needlenose to pull it out...mags are new Wilsons...haven't tried new Cobramags yet in GI,know they work great in everything else...I know polishing the ramp should probably help...any advide?

    Hi, Stuart, I tinker with these things every now and then, and would really need to have yours on my bench to positively solve the problem. But, let's work through it in a logical manner. If you have included all the pertinent information, and if I, being in the early stages of senior senility understand the information, you are experiencing only last round problems. If you have a magazine of standard capacity, 7 rounds, and the first 6 work just fine, what could be the problem with the last round that would cause it to fail to extract, when the first 6 extracted o.k.? The feed ramp wouldn't have anything to do with it (but polishing almost always improves feeding--not your problem), so what else could it be that would cause the last (only) round to stick in the chamber so hard that it won't extract; or so hard that you need pliers to pull it out. Since this didn't occur with the first 6 rounds, we are looking for something that only exists with the last round. It probably is your magazines. After the last round feeds into the chamber you magazine follower may be rising up too high behind the chambered shell to allow extraction. It is even more suspect that you are using custom magazines. Try some plain old G.I. or G.I. Spec. magazines, and your problem will probably go away. Remember: No two things are truly alike, and variations occur even in machine-produced guns and magazines. Your mags may just not be compatable with your particular pistol. Another thing you might look at is the strength of the recoil spring. The strength of the spring in lbs. of resistance varies with the type of ammo being used. You'll find a selection of various weights in the Brownells Catalog. I believe that Colt sells their Govt. Model with an 18 lb. spring for general use, but folks shooting a steady diet of 230 gr. hardball ammo sometimes find that a 22 lb. spring gives better function, and those shooting target or reduced loads often opt for something lighter than the issue spring. Since your gun isn't a Colt I'm not too certain what it comes with, and Gold Dots can be +P. Excellent bullet, use it myself as first choice for defense in my Para Ord (mine are +P). So, I think that you'll solve your problem by changing magazines and possibly your recoil spring. Best wishes.
