Do i have to get a different choke for steel shot? Or can i use a factory lead choke?

Depends on the actual lead choke size.
Cylinder lead = modified steel
Imp Cyl lead = Imp Mod Steel
Modified lead = full steel
If in doubt, buy the Steel choke

You can shoot both lead and steel shot in most chokes from cylinder to about modified.
Once you get tighter than modified many manufacturers recommend lead shot only. As long as you are not using a tight choke, you can use both lead and steel through the same choke.

Anybody know why the mfg. recommends a differnet "full" & "turkey" chock if you're shooting steel & or Hvy Shot vs. coated or lead which is the chock that comes with most guns off the shelf? All are sleeved so I don't get it? 0 -

Steel and hevi-shot don't deform as much (in the barrel) as lead, this makes them shoot tighter (smaller) patterns than lead shot.
A choke is a constriction (reduction in diameter), at the muzzle end of the barrel, that controls the pattern size. Patterns are measured as the percentage of pellets hitting into a given size circle at 40Yards (the tighter the choke the higher the percentage).
"Cylinder choke" ID is the same diameter as the ID of the barrel.
IIRC "Improved Cylinder" chokes are .005" smaller than the barrel ID, "Modified choke" is .010 smaller etc.

I understand the concept but what is the difference btwn the lets say extra full chock for lead shot the expensive reccomended after market extra full chock for Hvy. Shot? Why isn't it recommended to shoot Hvy. Shot out of a gun with a LEAD ONLY full chock? Maybe an alloy difference? Can't figure it out.0 -
Depends on if you want the end of your barrel to be 3-6" shorter. Steel and HS don't deform like lead, large shot sizes don't deform as easy as small sizes. Which means they are a lot harder to squeeze through the choke constriction (which if to tight can act like a barrel obstruction regardless of shot material used).
That HS "turkey" choke is probably between lead Mod & IM with a long forcing ramp to increase the time available for the shot to re-arrange itself.
Try this experament, drive a 1/2 diameter piece of lead into a 7/16 hole. It'll go in because the lead will deform enough. Now try the same thing with a 1/2 diameter piece of steel.

Ah ha....I think I got it! Looks like I shell out the $50 or whatever for the H.S. Turkey chock. I've been using my old 1100, 3" with an after market turkey brl. Came across a 3 1/2" 870 I just could't pass on. Turkey season opens in mid April but first a trip to Gander. Appreciate the lesson. 0 -
