no serial # ?

Took in two rifles that I can't locate serial numbers on? One is a Mossberg 185D-B 20 ga (anyone have a spare bolt?) and the other is JC Higgins model 30 22lr. They don't appear to be refinished. Would these have been manufactured w/o? Any suggestions?

  If they were manufactured prior to 1968, there was no federal requirement to serialize them. The GCA of 1968 is what changed the requirement for all firearms to be serialized. It was real common for many of the major firearms manufacturers to omit serial numbers on their "less" expensively made rimfire rifles and shotguns (one less step in the production process).

  Where it asks for serial number enter NONE.

  I have a model 30 JC Higgins that dates to 1960. They were built by High Standard and are really nice little rifles (Yep, I am looking for another). Mine also has no serial number.
