What caliber is best for benchrest shooting? and why?

What range? Choices range from 100yd to 1000yd (with special shoots out to a mile)
What class? Stock, hunter, light, heavy or unlimited (rail guns)
I don't shoot BR, but JustC and a couple of the others do, and those will be a couple of the first things they will want to know.
A 100yd hunter class shooter will have completly different requirments than a 1K unlimited shooter.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
6mm ppc for short say under 600 but not limited to (unsure)
6.5-284 for 1000
As Tailgunner said, but these are a few in the top 2 runnings.

Benchrest- Varmint lite/heavy gun and the list goes on. Justc has alot more bench time than me. Benchrest is a large world [:D] That I will never see in my life time.

What is everyone's bench rest shooting opinion on a Remington model 700 in 8 mm Mauser caliber?
Just asking because...I..Know "someone"..who's planning on that very setup.

I'm going to guess that the 8mm Mauser probably won't work very well. Just a guess, I know absolutely nothing about BR shooting. 0 -
The 6mm PPC, well lets just say with the top dogs only 1 hole is mesured[:D]

6mm PPC is the predominant choice for 100-300 yds. 6.5-284 is becoming the front runner for 1000 yd. You still see a lot of .308, 30-06 and 300 Win mag and some 7 Rem mag. still.
To answer Tr Fox's question, The 8mm is still very big in European competition. Ballistically, it will stay right up with the 30-06. So it could very well compete at 1000 yds. Most Mauser rifle types have sights graduated out to 2000m. It kicks a lot so shooting it off the bench makes people flinch therefore not so popular off the bench. As do the last three calibers mentioned above. -Hope that helps.
