.357 sig

Is there any cheaper rounds for the .357 sig? Even the cheap winchester FMJ's around here are still $17.99/50.

    I have heard a lot about this caliber. Some say it is comparable to the .357 Magnum, while others say it is barely up to 9mm +P capability. Is it a good PD cartridge when using the 125gr Speer Gold Dot cartridge? I figure it to be around 1300 fps velocity and 475 Ft/lbs at PD range. Any experience out there with it?

    There are 2 .357 calibers for handguns. The .357 Magnum revolver cartridge, and the fairly new .357 Sig for auto pistols.

    Usually fast magnum bullets are not as accurate as slower moving non-magnum bullets. The .357 Magnum is a longer version of the .38 special as you may know. One of the most accurate revolver bullets is the .38 spl mid-range wadcutter.

    For purposes of general shooting and self defense the .357 faster bullets perform well. As with all bullets, accuracy depends alot on who is pulling the trigger.

    I would rather shoot a 38+P over a 357 magnum and I would rather shoot a 40 S&W then a 357 Sig (Basicly a 9mm on steroids)

    I prefer the 357sig vs 40s/w, or 357mag.
    The 357sig with its necked down case has more reliable feed.
    Than those whose cases, which are not necked down.
    Also the 357sig was designed as a direct replacement for 138gr 357mag revolver round for the semi-auto pistols.
    As for as peformance I would rank them 9mm,357sig,40s/w,45acp and 10mm.

    I strongly suggest you rent one at the range and shoot a box of ammo through it before you buy one.

    I have them all,..and I can say that the 357sig is one badd azz caliber. Plenty of power and very accurate in my P226

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Now, what can we say about the .357 Sig????? It's gooooood!![:D]

    SAAMI lists the case pressure capabilities up to 40,000 PSI. That's higher than the 9mm Luger+P, .357 Magnum, .38 Super, .40 S&W or 10mm. So, if your choice is to load hot, here is a case that can take it.

    I know people that shoot the "powerfull" 9X25 Dillon, (10mm necked down to 9mm), and while it has a slightly bigger powder capacity, I have matched and exceeded their loads. I do load the .357 Sig a little bit longer than factory and shoot them exclusively in "ramped barreled" 1911's. I have chronographed 115 JHP .357 Sig loads at over 1700 fps. The Vihtavuori book lists loads of 115 FMJ with 9.0 gr. of N350 for a muzzle velocity of 1569 fps. Then again, the same book lists loads for the .357 Magnum for 125gr.FP/XTP(Hornady) with 18.4gr. of N110 for a muzzle velocity of 1772 fps. But I am getting the .357 Sig speeds out of a Commander length (4.25") barrel (with a compensator) and the .357 Magnum speeds are for a 7" barrel.

    So, in conclusion, the Sig loads are pretty close to the Magnum loads in muzzle velocity, even with a shorter barrel. The perceived recoil is less with the Sig, and the pistol cartridge capacity is usually at least twice that of the revolvers.

    But, I still rather use my 10mm with 135gr. JHP at m.v's over 1550 or my " 'ole faithfull" .45 ACP. And, yes, of course, in 1911's.[:D][:D][:D][8D][8D]

    357 sig. huh? I had one in a Glock Subcompact. Loud as hell. Kicked
    hard as hell. Ripped threw a phone book and a car tire like a bat out of hell. Getting hit by a 357sig would probably hurt like Hell.

    I found the Spear Gold-dots and the Corbon JHP to be quite tasteful.
    Throught out my tests, the Gold-dots appeared to stay together in one piece better, made the gun kick harder, but accuracy was close. I wish I could have measured fps.

    I personally would choose a heavier gun, or some ports or something
    for such a Hot Load. Several guys at the gun club who tried my gun would agree.

    I've been carrying a Sig 229 in 357 sig on duty with the Dallas PD for over 5 years. Prior to that I carried a 226 in 9mm. The 357 sig take a little to get used to, but it is just as accurate as the 9mm with practice, an it packs a bigger punch. I highly recommend the caliber.

    I have the Glock subcompact in 357 sig. It is a mean gun. This gun is not for plinking. I intend to use it only for self defense and, of course, I'll practice once in a while with it at the range. The Cor-Bon ammo says it travels at 1500 fps and its fpi is rated at 575.
