how to fill in a swivel sling hole in a stock?

i have a beauty of a aaa select stock for my super xm1. but the DPO(dreaded previous owner) had a sling put on it! [:0] the forearm strap attached at the cap so no problem there, but back at the stock, theres that hole. now we all know no matter how hard you try, youll never get the grain and finsih to match, so my question really is...do they make 'pop in' name plates that will tap into the hole? what i would like to do is convert the empty hole to a hole with a brass plug tapped into it with my initials on it. so the gun will look like the plate was always there. any smiths out there willing to take it on? lmk!

    I had the samething on a weatherby MV deluxe.
    There are afew people on other sites that sell
    turkish walnut AAA stock blanks maybe they can sell you some scrap
    to make a dowel.
    Mine was a small 1/4 inch hole and a friend knew a guy
    who was doing a trap stock from a blank so I got
    afew little strips to try to match the grain
    Get enough to do some testing with oil and clear coat.
    Make the dowel long, glue and sand down with a dremil tool
    to just under the clear coat . then add your clear coat
    blend

    Mine turned out great but I wish I had thought about a brass
    plug first sounds like a good idea
    I dont know but could you melt and pour your own
    plug brass or gold???

    making just a plug would be easy but making that oval shaped plate and attaching it would be a bear. the whole thing would have to be a one piece molded metal... sorta like a tumb tack that just pushes into the hole forever. follow me?[?]

    First of all, with all those tools you have, surely you can come up with something.

    Secondly, You can get a plug cutter and make a plug, try home depot for the cutter. it fits in a drill press. You would then need to get a piece of wood similiar to or the same as the stock.
    you might even be able to cut a plug from under the buttplate on the actual stock. then fill that hole with putty, no one would ever see that hole.

    the plug then glues in and gets finished.

    uhh...what part of, i want to make a brass initial plate to fill the hole didnt you understand? [:D] i dont think im gonna find a piece of scrap claro french walnut laying around w/o sailing to france on the next frieghter.[:p]

    Yes I see,mine was just a screw hole without
    the oversized indent around it

    I have a Ithaca 280 that has a place (brass circle)for initials
    on the stock from factory looks great.
    Make a mold of hole and Indent
    just screw your swivel into other wood for your mold
    make it oversized on the head end
    You will have to make your Indent deeper[xx(]and wider
    to get the plug to seat flush

    I can hook you up with a friend that owns a machine shop that can do that for you. I work with him designing custom bike parts - he has a bike shop too. I'll also make a the 3-D model of your part and supply it to him in his machine language to the initials can be CNC cut.

    If you wish, e-mail me and tell me the diameter, length, and initials. I'll model it, give it to him, and he will supply an estimate.

    I have some Brazilian Rosewood that you could carve a shaped plug out of (enough that you can make a few mistakes and a grip/forend cap or 2). Let me know and I'll slap a shipping lable on a stick for ya.
    Or you could make a wax (or clay) impression and have cbxjeff get a brass one machined for you.

    If your stock has any "marblecake" or dark swirls in the grain you may hide the hole with Acra-glas. Run some shallow cuts out from the edges to make it look like a knot or swirl in the grain ,change it to uneven oval shape from round with little uneven tiny fingers projecting. Use a checkering veiner and scribe. Then fill it in with acra-gel with fine walnut dust and a dab of brown dye in it , after it sets up sand smooth and oil finish.If done artistically
    it can be blended in to look like it was part of the stock from the start.
