colt commander 38super

A friend offered to sell a satin finish, I assume nickel 38 super in the box with the warranty card from about 1972 to me. The gun also has ivory grips with the colt medallion. I'd say the gun is at least 98-99% I have 2 questions, is ammo readily available? and is a 38"super" desirable? o.k. a third question, approximate value?

    Ed..... There were 2 vesions of the Commander series 70. One is the Light weight which would have a "CLW" prefix in the serial number, and the "Combat Commander" which is the all steel version.

    38 Super ammo is in wide use these days, so you should have no problem with supply. That caliber is widely used in competition for power factor.

    The light weight Commander in .38 Super and 98% cond lists for $775.00 in the Blue Book. The Combat Commander for $725.00.

    Lets just say that those who knows the .38 supers potential love them ,they are hard to beat ,cycle speed ,and as stated power factor ,the recoil can be controlled down to almost non existent ,and accuracy is superb

    As far as ammo availability ,no you will not find them at wal-mart ,most who shoot them reload ,but the book price posted above might be correct book price ,but you will have trouble finding one that cheap ,if the one you are looking at can be had for book price ,jump on it

    yeah, 1972 was back before colt's quality control went downhill too, so a gun that early should bring much more than one made 8-10 years later. If you look at a colt or smith and wesson made in the early 70's and the same gun made in the late 70's, you can tell a HUGE difference in overall fit and finish.

    Ed, you need to double check the markings on the slide. If it is satin nickel the slide should be marked Combat Commander. There were no Commanders made in satin nickel. Like new in box run about $750.00 in my neck of the woods.

    Thanks Hunter, I checked and it does say Colt Commander. The guy I got it from is a retired police officer and he claims he ordered from Colt along with a matching 45(already sold). The box is marked satin and it certainly does not look at all refinished in any way. Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.

    I like to think of the 38 super as a 9mm magnum. The bullet diameter is .355 sme as the 9mm and not .357 the diameter of the 38/357. It is a under rated calibur and you would be happy with it. My 2 cents [8D]
