hand gun for wife???
My wife has always enjoyed shooting with me but my pistols are the bigger frames and hard for her to handle not to mention the calibers being 45acp or 40S&w. I was thinking of getting her a handgun of her own . she is a smaller build and has small hands. Does any one have any sugestions on cal and any specific models? thanks to all who reply , jar

4 inch barrel medium framed 38 special. I would say a Ruger or Smith and Wesson. Light recoil, inexpensive both the gun and ammo, very accurate. I would stay away from the snub nosed 5 shooters, they are not a begginers gun, even the 38 special kicks pretty good in these.

I agree. I'd tend to lean towards a small revolver, probably in .38 special. I have a Taurus 617 total titanium that is nice and light. When shooting .38s out of it, it's pretty pleasant to shoot, even for smaller people. 0 -
For a small framedwoman with small hands I'd suggest a 9mm and certainly nothing larger than a .40 S&W. Women can become excellent pistol shots with even the big bores but it is gnenerally easier to get then to go out to the range with you when they know that they are not going to the range with you when they know thay won't get pounded hard after a day shooting and 9mm fills the bill here. The CZ-75/85 series are good solid guns at a reasonable price and are not so large as to make them hard to handle for small hands. The classic Browning High Power is also a good choice here. For a revolver try an S&W L frame as the .38 Special target load is very tame and easy to manage. .

See if a Walther P-99 will fit her hand.
They have 3 different size straps for the grips, so that it will fit in different sized hands.
Have them put the small one on to try out.

i started out on a s&w 36 chief, snub nose. it wasnt bad, extremely inaccurate, as for handling, ehh prolly not a very beginner kick. i would suggest a 22magnum, like a ruger. if ya wanna get her into semi-auto, a walth ppk in 380 is an excellent choice. my step dad has one and ive prolly shot at least 300, closer to 400 rounds through it. the thing will take any type of ammo. as for accuracy....depends on whos shooting, im sure once you get good with one, your opinion on its accuracy will be different. 9mm is like the 40 s&w only smaller. maybe a firestorm mini 9mm, good gun, ok caliber, under $300 new[8D]

Just a note my wife likes her Colt Magnum Carry. The heft of the .357 frame gives less recoil when she is shooting .38 specials and it is still small enough for her grip...

I second Mark about the 9mm auto, and especially his selection of the CZ-75 or Browning High Power. Simple single action controls are better, IMO, if you are going to go the auto route.
Also, in that vein, one of the wise old-timers at my range hipped me to a neat idea. If her hands are big enough for it, find a 1911 in 9mm for your wife. Besides being a viable target and defense gun in and of itself, it will give her useful experience with an actual 1911 (should she ever need/want to go to the .45) including stripping and cleaning it, plus she'll have the LOOK of everyone else's .45 earning a lot more respect from the guys at the range! The narrower grip on the 1911 might fit her hand a bit better than the double-stack guns, plus pretty custom 1911 grips (like pearl, for example) are pretty easy to find.
While I also agree strongly with the idea of light-loaded .38 specials, I'd like to add a small caveat to what a few of the others have said. I don't know your wife, obviously, but I've shot with a few women, and in my experience the K/L frame Smiths (particularly long barrelled ones) are just too heavy for some ladies to shoot for any length of time. So that is probably worth exploring by trying, before buying.
Also, if the point is just fun at the range, what's wrong with a .22 pistol? Its pretty hard to go wrong with one of the Ruger 22/45s as it emulates the 1911, but is cheap to feed with little recoil or noise. Its very hard to argue with a Smith 41 target .22, if you've got the money and are willing to go that far!
If the point is giving her a gun that she's actually going to carry, you have to match that to how she's going to carry it (purse, holster, etc), which complicates things a bit.0 -

Depends on the wife/girlfriend.
First wife was about 6'/140lbs. and she preferred (still does) the Lady Smith in 38Spl. 2" Featherweight and my current wife really likes the PPK/S in 380. We have two of them, matter of fact. She has a much smaller frame/hand @ 5''7"/115-120Lbs.+/- She also likes the Maks (Rus.9/about the same as the 380)..
We found the best way to fit the gun to the lady, of course, is to let them try everything that looks interesting. We are fortunate that we have a lot of shooting friends and one of our sons works at a range.
`Victim #1' took to the Smith right away - really wasn't interested in anything else - tried some suggestions but found her comfort zone almost immediately.
`Victim #2 - `the incumbent' - looked/tried out just about all the smaller wheel guns and semi's she could get her hands on before settling on the Walther - including an old Nazi PP .22 that a friend has. Stuck to the PPK/S like glue - happy as a clam!0 -
You can't go wrong with a S&W K Frame in .38 or .357 You can get grips for a K frame to fit almost any hand.

Mine carries the Sigma Smith 380 auto. She loves the "no safety" when/if she needs to use it "just pull the trigger." I took it out and shot every kind of load throught it, about 200 rounds, without a failure! She trusts it and so do I . IMO. nmabu 0 -
My wife is tiny in size and so goes her hands.She is super deadly with her Colt Detective 38 special.So much so that I speak very softly when addressing her.It of course is a double action revolver, NO hard to find safety,NO racking the slide to load,NO wondering if it is loaded,just pull it out,squeeze the trigger and do the mission. Too often we forget that they do not get into guns like we do and if there is any special things to do to start shooting they get confused.My wife shoots no more than twice a year so with the DA she doesn't have to worry about how to get it to go BANG.Just slip it out of the holster and it is ready to end the situation.Best to do as was suggested,take her to a shop with lots of handguns and let her pick out one.Let the salesman talk to her because like your kids,she will respond better to a stranger than to you when it comes to imparting knowledge.Good luck in your venture.modoc
