What is a good .45 to start with?

I am looking for a .45 and have been hearing good things about Springfield 1911's. My buddy has a Ruger p90 that he paid only about $200 for and it looks nice(havent shot it yet). Are those any good and is that price normal for a used one in like new condition? Help me find a good beginner .45.

    I suggest an EAA Witness with the Wonder Finsih. They come in full size and compact versions, are both double and single action, and are perhaps one of the best values around. Great shooters, reliable, and all-around hard to beat. Can be had brand new for $300-$350. You can always get a fancy 1911 later if you want, but the Witness is a great place to start. I sure love mine, and would definitely take it over the Ruger.

    My Springfield has been going great for the last decade or more. You can pay more, but I'm not sure you need to. Everyone I've known to buy a Ruger semi auto has eventually sold it off and upgraded. If you can find a basic model Springfield for not much I'd go for it.

    Those Rugers are heavy as heck, and ugly as sin (at least to me)...BUT they shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot. And shoot ANYTHING you can throw in them. They would make a great first 45. A P-90 was my first. Wish I still had it, just for sentimental reasons. [:(]

    Get a Springfield G.I. milspec, parkerized, SS, or armory coat.
    They come with a lifetime warranty, a great accessories coupon, and are a time tested, reliable machine.

    Go to the Springfield Website (Geneseo, IL) and look at the 1911 A1 pages and learn. Then go to Gunbroker.com and look the milspecs up
    and buy one for less than $500.00. You'll never regret it.

    My personal experience with two such .45s has created my opinion.

    good price for the ruger. Good guns, tough as heck. IS this a carry gun, or for around the house, in the truck?

    Are you comfy with a single action?

    a 1911 style gun is hard to go wrong with, and a decent one can be had inexpensively, and the real great attribute about a 1911 is that you can make it your own gun with parts, etc.

    And (though some may argue) it is possible to take a fairly low end 1911, and with some new parts, make it work as well as some of the $1000+ guns on the market.

    if this sort of thing ain't your bag, there are many .45's out there that will work well for you. As a general rule, most people stay away from certain makes, like hipoint...other brands are a little more subjective, like llama-bersa, some love them, some hate them, mostly for quality reasons, and I guess taurus is in that catagory.

    Me, I am weird and like oddball gunz...I shoot a megastar .45....if I run out of ammo, I can use it as a club, or an anchor..:)..

    There's a reason why the 1911 is going stronger than ever almost a century after it was introduced. It's a solid design. The Witness is also a very good design. The Ruger P90 is IMHO, a lesser product.

    ...just my two cents. Springfield or Colt in the 1911 fashion and you can't go wrong. Commander size is a great all around toy. I carry em daily.

    This is a no brainer ,a 1911 you buy you will have a market to resale it if you choose ,buy a ruger or witness ,your market just fell by 75% ,you will sell them ,but you will also get beat down on price ,with a 1911 it retains most of its resale value ,and you have a huge customer base

    Ruger should have stayed with revolvers in my opinion ,the p series are sub standard all the way around ,the only people praising them ,are the ones who bought them ,and are to stubborn to admit it was a mistake {at this time a p owner would jump in ,and state how wrong I am with that statement ,just proving my point further ,but this thread will be closed to soon for that}
