.270win .280 rem. 7mm mag.

I looking at a rifle for deer and elk. these are the cals. that im looking at. I have heard that 30-06 is is to slow. What cal. would you get in these rounds. .270 win .280 rem. 7mm rem mag

    personally, 7mm Mag and some work at the loading bench.

    Westlund, Judge for yourself by getting Guns and Ammo annual. It has ballistics on all calibers, weights and brands. You can also use Hornady.com as well. I think, personally, the 30-06 is the best of the lot, especially with Hornady's SST - Light Mags. Inter -Bond and not their inter-lock for elk. Winchester Accu-bond look good, too. I'm sure there are many other good "hot" factory loads as well. Compare these charts at the longer ranges, since this is where the better ones really make a difference and the need the greatest. good luck

    You heard wrong about the 30-06.....Pick Up a Copy of Cartridges of the World by Frank Barnes...........or a Book on Reloading ...It will open whole new Vistas for you............

    forget the 280 man I think NOT , the 280 kicks ass on the 270 any day , and with all but the heaviest bullets will equal or beat the 06, at the most the 7 mag has maybe 200 fps more than the 280 and with that extra speed you use way more powder , get more recoil and noise

    I Like the 270 1st, then the 280, but the 06 is not a bad choice either. Find ourt what you like and go with that. All of these are adequate for what you are wanting to do.[:D]

    They're all about the same - especially in the field. You're the most important component when it comes to hunting - finding and hitting the game. Nonetheless, 30-06 is the most practical and versatile, and I recommend the 165 gr. SST light magnum ammo by Hornady - 3015 fps (WOW!).

    1. 7mm Mag
    2. 30-06
    3. .280 Rem
    4. 270 Win

    Who ever told you that crap about the 30-06 being too slow is full of horse manure BIG TIME[V]

    I hunt Elk. The elk I shoot are BIG and tough and hard to put down.
    Deer on the other hand will readily fall down when hit with a 270 win through the heart/lungs. Better thinking would class elk with moose and grizzly bear. So for elk use the bigest caliber that you can shoot accurately. I use a 300 win mag. It works for me. Best of luck in your upcoming hunt.
