Mauser Karbiner 98k stock
I have a 1943 Karbiner 98k and it has the regular sling slot and the 1/4 hole through the stock. However it also has a halfmoon area on the left side with a 1/4 inch rod across the recessed area about 4 inchesw from the buttplate. Can anyone explain what this is?

Sounds like you got one of those 98 K's that were used by the French. That was one of their modifications, it's called a "Sling-Bar". It was commonly located on the left side of the stock about 4" up from the butt-plate, held with wood screws.
