Turk mauser -- 7mm rem. mag
I am building a turk mauser (K. Kahle) and have done quite a bit of work to it. Last week I came across a really good deal on a new 7mm rem mag barrel ($50). My problem is that I didnt use my brain when I made the purchase.(lol) Everything goes together very nicely and all looks good, but I cant get the shells to feed out of the magazine. They get stuck in the neck before they can pop into the chamber. My question is this: Can a gunsmith mill out the mag rails so that this shell will feed through, or should I try to get my $50 back. Also, if I can get the rails milled will I run into more problems down the road? Thanx, Nate

Yes that is a doable job. Cartridge length is an issue with the Turk magazine box.

The 7mm Rem Mag, has a special cartridge case called a "Belted Magnum" it's approximately .040 greater in diameter then the 8 mm Mauser the Turk was originally chambered for.
In addition to the the magazine, the face of the bolt and the extractor will have to be machined to accept and feed the 7mm Mag. through the Turk action. This requires the the services of a COMPETENT Gunsmith who has access to a lathe and milling machine and knows how to use them.
My 2 cents, get your money back for the barrel and leave it in 8mm Mauser.

If you are going to re-chamber this rifle, it would be easiest to put in something based on a mauser case. If you don't want to use a Mauser based case then one of the 30-06 based cases would be my next recommendation. They all have the same case head by the way, .473". Some people have used the 250-3000 based cases and had good luck with those too. They are the 22-250, 250-3000, and 300 Savage. The latter two case family choices will require filing of the rails to make the cartridges feed properly.
One of the easiest choices if you are looking for speed (it also happens to be my next project too) is 6mm Rem. You get about 200-300 more fps than a .243 Win., and you won't have to change the action internally to get it to feed. -Good luck with what you go with.

If you aren't in a big hurry and are willing to put another $50 into it, send the action to ERShaw's. They will for a fee, I think $50, will open up the bolt face, the rails, etc. They list this as a magnum conversion. At the same time, if you haven't already done so yourself, you can get them to lap the lugs and true the front face of the receiver, $30per if I remember right. Call and ask them, the phone number is (412)221-3636. They would of course like to sell you one of their barrels, but I think they will do a mag conversion for you on the side. I picked up one of their #3 barrels in 338winmag threaded for M70. I sent it and a VZ24 M98 action back to them and four months and $100 later I was putting in a stock. 0 -

Yes, Shaw's has a website. It is something like ershawbarrels.com or the like. It usually takes me a couple of trys to get google to find it for me. Still you are probably better off calling and talking to the desk there. The guy who answers the phone is very knowlegable and helpfull. He can better answer your questions then the website. 0 -
