I don't believe there are records recording the serial number-date of manufacture for Marlins, particularly the early marlins. In some cases there are records of numbers produced each year which might yeild an approximation of dom. Production began in 1895 and ended in 1916. A note in Brophy indicates the highest observed or recorded serial number for the model 1892, is 436,495. Thus we can conclude that your friends rifle either doesn't exist or is very late production. Likely the latter... 0 -
Hello,
The Cody Firearms Museum has all of the early Marlin records, and for a fee, they can provide you with a factory letter that will tell you a lot about your rifle - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm
According to what I can find, your Marlin sgould have been manufctured circa 1907.

type marlin serial numbers in your search enjine and you will find a sight that will provide a online option. the rifle was made after 1906, the rifle was produced from 1892-1916. some records for marlins are hard to verify there is a group of records past 1906-1945 that were lost, cody only has records for serial# 4001-355504
