.45 Six Inch Target semi-autos/tried one?
Anyone have a personal opinion about the STI Target Master or the Springfield Long Slide 6-inch .45?
I had the occasion to beg/borrow the STI the other day at the range and I really want one now. The longer sight radius is delightful! Much more accurate than any I've tried in the past few years!
Anyone else try one of these? If so, opinion?
I understand the downside is that they cost twice as much as the standard .45 fare (around $2K? - I believe).

Last I saw longslide Springfields were going for around $1,000 STI's on the other hand would be closer to your $2,000 figure.
Both are good pistols, but STI is better. Really depends on what your planning to do with your pistol. Casual target shooting, etc., then go w/ the SA. Serious competition and your one of the "top" shooters in your area ... then you may want to spend the extra money for the incremental improvement that may be possible with the STI.
Have owned both, but sold off the STI when the eyesight got to the point where I was no longer competitive and wasn't inclined to modify the gun for optics like I ended up doing with the SA.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -

OK, I have a nice 5" SA 1911 - worked on and tuned - good shooter.
I also have a Kimber Gold Match 5" ~ SERIES 1 LA.
How would the longslide SA compare?
I liked the extra sight radius - no scope to be added.

Hello Long Slide 45's have been around for many years and are well liked for their longer sight radius . That said there has been a change of heart of sorts in the past 10-15 years. Bomar makes an exrtended rib that will fit on a standard slide and give the same sight Radius. With the advent of red dot sights All top NRA bulls-eye shooters use Red Dot, and a Long Slide is not LEGAL in CMP BALL matches. There are fewer good barrels to choose from in 6 inch. The gun does have a softer recoil. but you do need a better "FOLLOW THRU" when shooting a long slide. Out of a ransom rest the group size are both about the same out of a well built gun.The final point is buy what you like as that is one of the main reasons to get a new gun in the first place. All other things being equal the group should tighten up a bit. But "Perry" makes an excellent point ... there will be a learning curve for follow through and adjusting to the difference in weight and balance. Also, if your match shooting be certain that the pistol is "legal". CMP is a no-no, at least for the time being. What the future might bring I don't know ... if you would of asked me about red dots, or other optics, a few years back I would have said "never happen".
When your reaching the upper levels of competition shooting then changing barrels, etc. can help. If your an average or even somewhat above average shooter ... the improvements will be hardly noticable.
You've got a couple nice pistols so I add to the suggestion of just get what feels best to you if price isn't a limiting factor.

I have a red dot on my tricked out Redhawk . great application, but not interested on my .45s.

An additional complete "upper" can be made and fitted to your existing government (5") size SA, in a way that you can choose which upper to use, without sacrificing your gun or having to buy a new complete firearm.0 -
If your just looking to add a longslide to your collection, you can probably find a used AMT longslide for alot cheaper. I found my Javelina 10mm for $375. 0
