Need info/appraisal of Colt Mark IV/Series 70

I'm a Captain in the US Air Force, getting ready to move yet again and would like to sell a pistol that I don't ever fire. It was a hand down from my grandfather (WW II vet and huge firearm collector) after he passed away. It's a Colt Mark IV/Series 70 Government Model 45 Automatic Caliber SN 70G78660. It's a dark color with dark wood-colored grips make for a right-handed shooter (fitted position for the thumb in the wood grip), and has an adjustable rear sight post. I don't know how to tell the true condition, but is has been fired. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Dave, it's difficult to guess the value of a gun without having it in your hands. We might be able to come close if you have some high quality digital photos for us to look at. One clue you gave us is the description of the grips; they are replacements, as the originals were the same on both sides. I would expect it to sell for at least $500, but, depending upon condition, it could sell for $100-200 more.

    But knowing what something is worth, & getting a fair price for it, may be 2 different things. As I am sure you noticed, this website is sponsored by an online auction service for guns & related items. As a general rule, those guns that are well described, & well photographed, bring the highest price. You may be able to sell it locally, but your audience will be a lot smaller; it's your choice.

    Thanks, Neal. I plan on advertising and selling it here. After reading the information on shipping, looks like I'll have to find a local dealer to do the shipping. Any information on what kind of fee I should expect?

    You don't need to pay an FFL to ship for you. However, a nonlicensee can only ship a handgun by UPS or FEDEX Next Day Air, which will cost at least $50-60. If you follow the links from the Gunbroker home page, you will find most of the information that you need about selling & shipping firearms. You will also find useful information in this forum's archives.

    Dave....your Government Model Mk.IV Series 70 was made in 1976.

    As nmyers said, it has aftermarket grips, but if all else is original, that shouldn't affect the value too much. The adjustable sights may actually be a plus.
