rebarrel vs reline question

To fix a damaged barrel I have been advised that I might either get a new barrel or reline the damaged barrel. (the gun is a very old Savage 99). What are the advantages/disadvantages of each approach? Why might one opt for the new barrel over reline in this case, since relining would seem to be cheaper and alter appearance much less? The ultimate goal is to be able to use the rifle to hit a deer at 100 yds.

    I DOUGHT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RELINE THIS BARREL, MOST SAV. 99 CALIBERS HAVE TO MUCH PRESSURE FORTHIS OPTION. RELINING IS USUALY DONE ON LOW PRESSURE CALS. (.22 RIMFIRE, .32/20, .44/40 ECT)

    You have to look at the total cost of either operation --- if replacing the barrel, the cost of the barrel + labor; if relining, the lower cost of the liner + the higher labor bill. Of course, a new barrel may not even be available.

    The advantage of relining is that, externally, the rifle will look the same. A new barrel will look out of place if there are wear marks on the receiver & wood. And, if you replace the barrel, there is zero collector value.

    There is a 3rd option, however it costs about as much as barrel replacment and takes a lot longer, and that is rebore/rechamber. IE have your damaged 30-30 barrel rebored to 32Win spl (assuming that the dammage is minor enough to be cleaned up this way)

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
