    Peter....

Of the two cartridges, the 44 Mag is the far superior. Unless your "friend" reloads with something like Unique or Bullseye, it is fairly difficult to get the pressure too high for a Model 94 action. I pack 24.5 grains of WW-296 behind a 240 grain JHP, and 31.5 grains behind a 180 JHP... gun loves them (the 180 JHP clocks 2150 fps, making it a near equal to the 30-30 cartridge).

    Hi there Bert. =o)

Great to hear from you again.

    Thank you for the info.
We were just curious as to what the rifle would stand up to.

Another thing have come in now though - might take a Marlin 1895 45/70Gov't Guidegun into consideration as well.

But a 44Mag running nearly as "hot" as .30-30Win - is still a force to be recconned with. [:)]

I loved my Win 94 .30-30Win, but also the .357Mag allthough the caliber "sounds" like way bigger hehe. (when you say the caliber designation - OH .357.. OH Magnum.. hehe).

But thank you so much. =o)

By 'up the charge a little bit',do you mean beyond the book?
A max charged 44 mag in a 24" rifle will certainly do a bang up job on whatever ya point it at.To 'up the charge' could mean a KABOOM as the pressures go beyond what the gun will handle.
why not get a .454 Casull carbine. If that ain't enough oomph, your 'friend' needs some talking too. :)

    Throckmorton..
Well, the "Up the charge" idea was mine.
We we were talking about both 44Mag and 45/70 at that time.

So it was just an idea - if we were to have some cartridges reloaded for the 44Mag, just so we had an idea of what would be safe in a Winchester 94 lever action.

It wasn't because we wanted some ultra-hot earpiercing cartridges to shoot down the Spacestation with - just out of curiocity and safety.

In 45/70Gov't we seem to have cartridges that are usually around 250-300 grain projectiles - standard factory loads.

I've used 405grain projectiles in the 45/70Gov't Marlin 1895 Guidegun in US - in Pennsylvania when I went there last year.
Those were handloads by a friend of mine - they were loaded "hot". And those were... FUN in that exact gun.

But the initial question was just for safety reasons, if we were to reload some cartridges.
That is more cost effective and we could get the projectile we wanted.
Choice of ammunition is rather limited here - i.e. there are only a few variants to choose from.

I think your friend would be happy with the .44 Mag. I have a Marlin in .44 Mag that is a lot of fun to shoot. At least the Winchester would not have that #%^$@#%^## Micro Groove Barrel. Mine and also one owned by a friend are both extremely sensitive to the ammo they will fire accurately. Any bullet of .429 diameter will shoot basket ball sized groups. The .430 bullets(such as Hornady XTP)will give great accuracy. The .44 Mag is a very easy cartridge to reload also. I also have a Marlin 45-70 that is a lot of fun. Either caliber would be great

    GaBob.

    Thank you for your thoughts.
We've put it on hold for a little while - since those we've talked to, haven't got either of the rifles for the time being.
That gives us a little time to figure out what we want.

I've got the hots for a 45/70Govt Marlin - ammo would run at roughly a dollar a pop.
That is for materials for handloads all the way through - no worktime/-pay included.
