Black Iron? I don't know, but the ones I own came from Brownells and are just mild steel guage stock bent and welded, I also have stainless ones for parkerizing, also appear to be plain stainless guage stock. 0 -
Black iron pipe, if this is what you are referring to, is NON galvanized pipe, commonly used for gas piping that is not underground.
Most any good electrode should work, of course, wire feed(MIG) being the least amount of slag, ash to clean off.0 -
black iron, comes in more then just pipes. Black iron is exactly what it is, iron. They call it black iron because it become black with rust unstead of red. The iron becomes black because the rust has a different oxygen composition the the rust that is red. The rust asociated with black iron is called ferrous oxide where as regular rust is called ferric oxide. Instead of flaking off like you would see in the regular iron, the black iron creates a thin layer of rust (that is black) that keeps the rest of the metal protected from rusting. This type of oxidation is common with several metals such as copper, aluminum, brass.
As for welding, you will be able to weld with just about any rod or type of welding. The heaviness of the rod is going to depend on how you are welding and the thickness. Just think of black iron as iron, and weld accordingly.0 -
If your welding is going to be done in a tank used for "hot blueing". do not use a mig. Mig wire is copper plated, as are many of the common welding wires with a ferrous composition.
Copper will destroy or damage most "hot" blueing salts baths.
Pure, soft (black iron) with low carbon content is used for the best results when activating blueing salts and consistent "hot blueing" processes.
Common, non galvanized, black oxide finished "bailing wire" can be used for "gas welding" or "TIG" welding these tanks. While stainless wire can also be used to do this welding, it will not have the same properties of normal ductile iron, although stainless will flow better and create no scale in the process. Either one will not cause possible contamination of the blueing bath.0 -
Try the TIG (heli-arc) process with small dia. E-70S-2 rod..It is copper coated, just use some emery cloth to remove the coating... Good luck.. 0 -
"BLACK IRON" WHEN USED TO DISCRIBE SHEET STOCK IS JUST UNCOATED (NOT GALVINIZED) MILD SHEET STEEL. IT CAN BE ARC WELDED WITH MANY TYPEDS OF RODS (6011, 6013, 7014 ECT.). IT CAN ALSO BE WELED WITH WIRE FEED, THE SMALL AMOUNT OF COPPER COATING ON THE WIRE WILL BURN OFF IF YOU ARE WELDING A BLUEING TANK (BLUEING SALTS WILL TOLERATE A SMALL AMOUNT OF COPPER ANYWAY). MOST ANY SHEET METAL SHOP CAN BEND UP AND WELD A SET OF TANKS FOR YOU (16 GA. BLACK STEEL). IT ISN'T A GOOD IDEA TO USE STAINLES ROD TO WELD MILD STEEL AS THE EXPANSION RATIOS ARE DIFFERENT, THE WELD COULD CRACK AFTER MANY HEAT/COOL CYCLES. 0 -
Black iron is just pure, uncoated and non-alloyed iron.
Once you begin to put in other materials to alter strength, corrosionresistance and other factors - it's no longer black iron.
Black Iron do show red or black rust, and when you see a pipe, made in black iron - you would see a rough surface at times, there are sometimes black flakes of rust that you can peel off or brush off with a file or steel-brush.
Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.
