I have 2 kinds. One is battery powered like a flachlight with a plastic elbow on the end to fit the breech. The other is similar to what you described. A bent piece of fiber optic plastic that works off of ambient light. I bought both at Gander Mountain but have seen both at reputable local gunshops. You could also try Ebay or even the auction here at GB.

this is a listing on GB
just type in bore light under search

    Hoppes #BRL1 Bore Light

A useful tool for clear inspection under any conditions. Illuminates the bore fully, so nicks, scratches, pits and fouling can be seen easily. Good for safety checks and for lighting hard-to-get-at areas. Locking feature can lock light on for longer inspections. A good tool to take along if you are buying a used firearm. Uses two AAA batteries (not included).

If you go to the GB auction pages you can type in "bore light" and see two for sale that are powered. If you type in "bore lite" you will see an unpowered version for sale.

This guy sells them on GB. I bought one the other day. I haven't received it yet, but it's a good deal.

I've used both battery powered and available-light types for the past 50+ years, and gave up the battery jobs as soon as I got the AL type.

But here's a tip: get 2 or 3 of them. They're handy, they're inexpensive, they're small, AND THEY GET LOST/MISPLACED REAL EASY!!!

Keep one in your range case, one at your work bench, and a spare or two in a desk drawer - or whatever.

I think I know what you're thinking of.
I bought 3 at the SHOT Show last month.
It's called Barrel Lite. Cost $3 each.
