GUN OIL??????????????
ONE FOR YOU GUNSMITHS: WHY HASEN'T ANY MAJOR GUN MFG. GOT ON THE FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL TRAIN??????? IN 1972 I WAS IN A AROMER CORSE IN THE PI ON THE M15/M16/1100/MOD 12 & THE OLD ARMY INST. A E-7 AT THE TIME PUT A QT.CAN UP ON HIS DESK & ASKED US IF ANY ONE KNEW WHAT KIND OF OIL IT WAS. BEING IN THE A/F WHEN I READ THE CAN I SAID IT WAS TURBIN OIL WHAT WE USED IN OUR T-56 ENGINES ON OUR C-130'S WHY!!!
& HIS REPILY WAS IT IS THE BEST GUN OIL THERE WAS & THAT IT DIDN'T LEAVE ANY RESDUE AT HIGH TEMP'S & OPER.'ED AT EXT LOW TEMP'S WITH LITTLE OR ON DRAG & THAT WAS WHAT WE USED IN THAT CORSE. AS FAR AS I KNOW COBRAY & ISRAEL UZI IS THE ONLY ONES TELLING THIS STORY.JUST FOOD FOR THOUGH. I HAVE BEEN USING IT TO THIS DAY

I like 10 weight engine oil. One quart every 10 years about does it for all my guns. Last quart cost 59 cents. If it's good enough for an auto engine, it ought to handle any gun I have. Sure beats $3 for a 4oz can. I'm mostly serious. If I were in the arctic I'd go with graphite. 0 -
Castrol makes a gun oil that is synthetic. Good stuff! 0 -
I have sitting right in front of me two 6oz (177 ml) metal contianers (pump spray type) of Castrol synthectic GunLube which, as Dale has said, is very good stuff...although I still swear by good old Ballistol for darned near everything.

THE LAST TIME I LOOKED AT THE CASTROL OIL IT WAS A SYN.BLEND NOT FULLY SYN. AS MOBIL 1 IS. IN THE EARLY 90'S I SHOT TWO BROWNING A-5[GODS GIFT TO US FOR A SHOTGUN] ONE LUBED WITH HOPPIES GUN OIL & THE OTHER ONE WITH MOBIL 1 JET OIL IN NOME AK.@ -30F WE TAPED & TIMED EACH BOLT ACTION FROM OPEN TO CLOSE. THE HOPPIES OIL GUN TOOK 1.86 SEC & THE MOBIL 1 OIL GUN TOOK .78SEC GI'S SOME TIMES HAD TO MUCH TIME ON THERE HANDS BUT IT WAS FUN

The can states on the lable: Full synthectic formula designed for maximum firearms protection. As far as I am aware Mobil 1 produces motor oil and not firearms specific lubricants. Castrol provides a telephone number on the container which you can use to call their chemical engineer(s) and inform him/her of your concerns that their product is not actually fully synthectic as advertised: 714-660-9414.

Lucas Oil makes a synthetic gun oil.I use BMW fork oil.Pricey for fork oil,but reasonable for firearms.[;)]

Forget that BMW overpriced stuff,switch to Amsoil fork oil, just as good,and much cheaper,synthetic oil. 0 -
Polymer engineers spend piles of time and money developing lubricants for specific purposes, and we use fork oil and break fluid and who knows what all on our guns. We really should tell them they are wasteing their time. Still got tubes in your radio? 0 -
Eezox is synthetic and has temperature properties of -95degrees to + 450degrees. Outstanding product and have been using it for many years.[:)] 0 -

About 10 years ago I knew an old guy that was a watchmaker by trade, and he was really into firearms too.
He subscribed to a gun and gun accessory testing magazine. (I forgot the name of it, hope someone here knows what it was.) This gun magazine did only testing. They did not accept any ads, and bought what they wanted to test off the shelf.
One article I saw really caught my attention. It was on gun oil's and grease.
They tested the high dollar gun oils, and high dollar grease. All made specifically for guns. These 'gun' items were tested against plain old 10-40 motor oil and Vaseline. The 10-40 and the Vaseline worked better than the 'gun specific' items.
I haven't bought any 'gun' oil since then. I don't use 'grease' enough to buy any, cept for the 'grease pots' I have for my Garand.
