The CZ52 is a great gun for the money.I picked one up a couple of months ago and it's a blast to shoot(In more ways than one.WEAR YOUR EAR PROTECTION!!)I gave $129 + tax at a little gun shop I frequent.Ammo's reasonable, but not sometin' your gonna get at Wally World.

Just don't come back to us next year & ask if we know where the importer has moved, because some part broke & you want it repaired under warranty. Like you said, it's surplus; you're buying it "as is".

The only thing i dont like about cz52 is the barrel looks really long. Anyone know how long it is?

    I've never measured the bbl. on mine,but I'm guessing 5" +/-.

It depends on what you want it for. The Makarov is sighted in out of the box, compact, doesn't need any parts changes and good defense ammo can be gotten for cheap. However, it is a bit underpowered for longer range shots and lacks in potential.
The CZ-52, like a Tamiya plastic model kit, is nothing special out of the box, but can be made in to one of the highest performing standard handguns imagionable. The disadvantages are the ammo is a bit scarce, they are equil in size and weight to a military .45 ( compare the 2 if you don't believe me ) and the ammo is extreamley powerful and even hollowpoints are likley to overpenatrate in self defense. However, it's range is unreal ( litterally half the drop at 300 yards as the .357 and .44 Magnum ), has the most potential trigger for enhancment i've incountered yet on a semi-auto ( mine is comparable to the older High Standard ones! ), and can be made very beautifuel and many good parts can be bought for upgrading them.
They can also EASALLY be modified to take baby eagle rear and sig sauer front Trijicon sights ( $24.00 package from CDNN Investments. I have pictures below of a couple CZ-52s I customised. The one with the black grips is actually by far the best upgrade of the 2 ( note the trigger bumper and modurn mag-release.
Another option is the FEG PA-63. These things get VERY cheap, and mechanicley speeking, it's more or less a light weight Makarov, but is exturnally constructed more like a Walther PP.
Someone also makes a handgun that was one of Berettas earlier designs ( has visual similearities to the 92F ) that can be bought for pretty cheap. While it's junk out of the box, the Star model B is an enhancable firearm and is more then likley a good gun once put together right. Belive it or not, the tuned and reconstructed ones i've seen looked much like a baby eagle rather then a 1911.
Although it's not really surplus, i've heard some good things about Hi Point handguns as well.
Here are those CZ-52s I customised. One on top is my own ( photo taken before i installed Trijicon Sights ) and the other is one I did for a friend.

If the cz52 is a bit too large for your tastes you could look at the Makarovs, or you could pick up one fo the Spanish Star pistols that are kicking around like the BM model. It is very simmilar to a colt commander in size. It shoots cheap and widely availabel 9mm luger ammo and is sold for about what you are looking to spend. The people are right in saying the cz is a good gun, but it is a bit hard to get ammo for. This can be resoved by changing it over to 9mm with a kit. Its all up to you but you should take a look at the star pistols. They arent as asthetically nice as the redone or unissued cz's, but they are a fine design.

Need for barrel change is often a problem, but enhancing the trigger pull makes a difference in accuracy like you wouldn't believe. My CZ-52 has outshot many, many guns that are legindary for accuracy, including Sig Sauers, Springfields, Colts, Kimbers, Desert Eagles ( actually a very accurate weapon in the right hands ), S&W 29, Glocks, Ruger MARK II, heck, it's even outshot a few rifles.
