340WHBY vs 375H&H
I have a 340 whby mag, I can git ammo, up to 275 gr.[or 250 gr] I just booked a hunt for leopard, & plainsgame, & my future PH insists that I need a 375 H&H. Balistics seem very close, but he says the 340 is too hot, & is worried about "deflection"--need expert advice davidh@ecenet.com

I don't have any experiance with either cartridge. Either will suit you, hwoever, should the airline loose your ammo, you can pick up .375 H&H almost from any guide servixce or professional hunter in Africa. That my two cents, hope it clears some stuff up. 0 -

I have not been to Africa and probably don't have the right to an opinion but this is America so here it is. Having test fired both rounds at paper targets I have serious respect for both. I did notice the 340 WBY was MUCH LOUDER! That may be a concern for your guide service if several hunters are in the same area.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

First off, CONGRATULATIONS! This will be a trip that most of us will only dream of and you actually get to go!
Second, I try to apply common sense to as many situations as I can, eliminating emotions and prejudicial information in order to make the best decision possible. In this case, you have contracted with a PH, who's job it is to hunt and guide others professionally and successfully. This is his living and more importantly, this is his life. Yet you're unsure as to why your PH wants you to have a .375 H&H for your particular hunt. If you question his judgement, go find another PH that agrees with your point of view and take the rifle that you both agree on. Otherwise, take the opinion of your current PH which is derived from vast amounts of experience and get a .375 H&H. I know that if I was trusting my life to a PH when we were side-by-side in a leopard blind, I'd most certainly have the rifle and the ammunition loaded the way that he suggested.

Well the 340 WBY lauches a 250 grain bullet at about 2850 FPS. What your PH is mostly concerned with is that the bullet will not fully expand on such a small animal as a Leopard. The 375 launches a 300 grain bullet at roughly 2550 FPS and will expand. The 338 caliber bullets have a good sectional density as the 250 grainer is .313 compared to the 375 300 grainer at .305. Diameter is another issues. Lot of Leopard have been taken with 300 magnums and the old 30-06. If and when your PH has to go looking for a wounded Leopard in the bush, he will more than likely be carrying a shotgun loaded with buckshot. I will be doing a Buffalo, Leopard hunt in May of 2006 and I will be taking a 416 Rem. and a 375 H&H. I don't know if the country you are going to be hunting has a 375 caliber as minnimum caliber for the DGA of which I believe the Leopard qualifies.
