adl long vrs short action
Whats the difference in a rem 700 adl long action and rem 700 short action? I have a rem 700 adl in a 243, is it a long action or short?

Your .243 is a short action. Long action is for cartridges like 30/06, 270, 280, short actions are suitable for 308, 6mm,243, 22/250 etc. 0 -

6mm Rem won't fit in most short actions. It is based on the 7x57 Mauser, and retains that length. the COAL is a full .200" longer than a .243 or .308 (2.710" vs. 2.910")

While you may be correct for other manufacturers, Remington has been releasing the 700 receivers barreled and chambered for the 6mm Rem. for a long time. Their magazines in the short actions measure ~2.860" so technically, factory loaded ammunition by Remington at least, will fit in the standard short magazines of other makers also. It may not provide the best, efficient use of the case but that's what the situation is anyway.

Technically speaking you are both correct. But, the 6mm....like all other mauser based cases... works better in a long action. Remington pretty much lost the first go-round with Winchester in 6mm in part because of twist but also in part because they keep trying to stick them in short actions. They did it in their 722 with the .257 Roberts, the 700 Classic in .257 Roberts and 7mm. For whatever reason they didn't do it to the 8mm classic of last year. Maybe they finally learned something? Ruger and Win. use long actions for any Mauser based case. I gotta go with Hunter on that one.

I must agree with you all but the fact remains if the man has a .243 chances are it's a short action. Agree?
Some cartridges that are based on the 7x57 case length are on the cusp, they can be and sometimes are chambered in a short action, however they may be better suited in long actions so handloaders can take advantage of the longer overall cartridge length and seat bullets further out and use the space for more powder. This is also true for the .284 Winchester and it's wildcats.0 -

Sorry, I got off the original topic. Snellstrom is correct, you have a short action. A long action in Remington 700 is about 4" internal capacity. A short has maybe 3". Your .243 case is 2.015" plus whatever length you like to seat bullets (if you reload) Same with a .308. Mauser based cases are about 2-1/4" and the 30-06, 7 Rem mag and 300 Win mag all run just under or over 2-1/2". They need the full 4" to handle the longer bullets. -hope that helps more.

Generally the mauser actions run about 3-1/2" (over or under depending on which model). I own two Yugo M48's though, that are about 3-1/4" internal capacity. Too short, unfortunately, to effectively build a custom 30-06 on like a true '98. -hope that helps even more.

Oops!, sorry missed the point again. U.S. makers have pretty much been stuck on two lengths which are very close to one another. One exception is Savage. The internal capacity length is closer to a Mauser and they just use a magazine block behind the follower to adjust for cartridge length. -good luck.

The difference is the length of the magazine box and the length of the action overall. It is the length and width of the box that determines which cartridges will fit and feed correctly.

The answer given which included the 6mm Rem. in Remington short actions is absolutely correct. Remington has been and is still listing 6mm Rem. chambered in short action Mdl. 700's. The 6mm Rem. will fit and does fit in the Remington 700 short action magazine. This is a fact.
The measuring discussion is also incorrect since it is SAAMI that sets the specifications for cartridges in this country whereby the length specification for the 6mm Rem. is 2.825" and the length of a short action magazine without a spacer is 2.860". Factory ammunition is loaded to this length (SAAMI), at least in this country. Whether this is a good decision by Remington is of no consequence.
The internal length of the Remington short action magazine is 2.860".
The internal length of the Remington long action magazine is 3.690".
The SAAMI maximum length for the 30-06 is 3.340".
The SAAMI maximum length for the standard magnums (.300 Win. Mag.) is 3.340".
The SAAMI maximun length for the long magnums (300 H&H) is 3.655".
