Steel shot in 870 shotgun question
I bought a new Remington 870 Express (2-3/4 and 3"). It has the screw in choke, which I think is modified. My question, can steel shot be fired from this shotgun?

1arm..... Most manufacturers approve of steel shot in chokes up to modified, so you are ok. Anything tighter than mod should be lead shot only.
My Benelli chokes, for example, are marked ok for steel up to modified, but imp mod and full are marked "no steel shot".

There are aftermarket chocks for full and extra full that are designed for steel and or Hvy. Shot. I don't quite understand this as all shot ride in a sleeve anyway? Maybe an alloy difference? Anybody know? 0 -
Almost everyone I know duck hunts with an 870. The steel shot will not harm it at all. Its a tough gun that can take a beatin.

Steel is a lot harder than lead, and the pellets are larger, so they don't pack in near as well when going through a choke. Since they don't pack all that well, and are harder on the barrel, you don't really want to try it.
