Cleaning the Ruger 10/22

Well after receiving good advice that the dirty cheap 22 ammo that I have been running though the stainless baby, I have decided it is time to clean the rifle. So tell me how to do it correctly. I have long lost the owner's manual.

Exploded diagrams would be helpful if anyone knows where to find them.

What has to be removed inorder to give it a good cleaning?

    This should give you plenty of information to break your rifle into compenent pieces which is not difficult.

    Here are two interesting notes. With todays aerosol solvent cleaners it is possible to do a good job of cleaning the internals of the 10/22 without any disassembly. Just spray and flush the mechanism and re-lubricate. I would advise to spray clean out of doors.

    The other note is some people will drill a hole in the rear of the reciever to facilitate cleaning. The hole must be large enough to accomodate the cleaning brush and jay, say about 0.25-inch. The hole should be drilled below the stock so when the rifle is assembled, the hole is invisible. This facilitates cleaning the rifle from the chamber rather than the crown and overcomes a defect in the 10/22 design.

    Aerosol spray may just push crud down into places the can not be flushed out without disassembly.
    You really need to do a complete teardown to clean correctly in my opinion.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    As I recall, your problem was misfires, or failures to eject, or something like that involving the bolt area.
    The easiest way to tear it down is to remove the stock, remove the barrel, let the bolt slide forward on it's guide & spring. Clean the whole thing shiny and reassemble. Just be sure to line up the extractor cut before you tighten down the barrel.
