muzzle break question
I purchased a Kel Tec PLR-16 and wanted to add a Yankee Hill Phantom muzzle break/flash suppressor. The threads match however the flash suppressor bottoms out before it reaches the end of the threading and crush washer, I tried two crush washers and the barrel threading is still too long. Other than forgetting the idea are there suggestions on a thicker washer/spacer I can use so that the phantom lines up properly? Thanks

I was thinking of adding a muzzle break on a rifle that I use for long range shooting, ok not long range, 500-800yds. average. And I was wondering what that will do to my bullet. Will it loose some of the velocity and muzzle energy, and if so would it really be noticeable? Any one have any ideas?
Oh incase it matter, it is a .30-06, 22inch barrel with 165gr. winchester failsafes that I use for deer.0 -
While you may get a slight change in point of impact, there would be noticeable reduction in performance.
However, there are only 2 reasons to put a muzzle brake on a rifle: 1) reduce the kick of a powerful gun for shooter comfort, & 2) reduce muzzle flip to permit a fast follow-up shot. I don't think either applies to your situation. On the down side, you will end up with a rifle more likely to snag brush when in the field.

As a general rule, muzzle brakes don't detract from either the velocity or the energy. However, they will change the Point of Impact because they act like a weight on the end of the barrel. The harmonics of your load will also be different for the same reason.
What is more of a concern is that given the bullet and the cartridge coupled with a short barrel, I think that your desire to shoot 500-800 yards should be re-examined.
With a 200 yd. Zero and the Maximum velocity reasonably attainable:
@ 500 yds. = 1633 FPS./ 977 ft.lbs./ 50.7" drop
@ 800 yds. = 1135 FPS./ 472 ft.lbs./ 227.0" drop
This is not a combination that I would recommend beyond about 400 yds. and that would be with a lot of practice at that yardage. I'm not trying to be the bad guy here, I'm just trying to help with the understanding of your load combination.
