.41 mag?

I am looking for a new revolver and the .41 mag is what I am leaning towards. Just a few questions.

1.) How is the recoil compared to a .38(currently the only revolver i own)?
2.) Is ammo hard to find?
3.) Who makes a good .41 mag(S&W, Ruger)?
4.) Is it accurate and fun to shoot?

    I am a big fan of the 41mag. many here will steer you to the 44mag. TYhis is also a good choice and both will recoil much more than the 38spl. Low powwer loads in the 41 mag and the 44spl. in the 44mag will recoil in there perspective guns about the same as you 38spl.. That being said, the full house magnum loads will have recoil but it is manageable. I believe both are accurate rounds but I would give the edge to the 41mag. The 44mag has alot more options for types of rounds the 41 is or limited unless you hand load. S&W, & Ruger make a good 41 mag. I am partial to the double action S&W model 57 and the single action Ruger. My 2 cents [8D]

    .41 Mag. is a good choice. It is more powerful than a .357 Mag., but a little less so than a .44 mag. So, to answer question (1), you will find the recoil to be much stronger than a .38 Special. (2) You will have no difficulty in locating ammo in the larger sporting goods stores, but it is not as easy to find in the smaller stores. Although this is a fine cartridge it has never enjoyed the popularity of the .357 or .44 mags., and it tends to sit on the shelves of smaller dealers too long for them to want to stock it. (3) Either of the manufacturers you have named make great guns for the .41 mag., and between those two it's mostly a choice of do you prefer single or double action revolvers. If you want a double action you might compare models and prices of S&W and Taurus. The answer to question (4) will depend a lot on you! Most high quality revolvers made today will shoot as well as the shooter, and of course, shooting is fun! The .41 mag. is used as a hunting round by many handgun hunters, and hunting is a sport requiring accuracy. It would not, however, be my first choice for formal target shooting because of the recoil, but it is lots of fun for informal target shooting. It realizes its best potential if you handload, because you can (a) solve the ammo availability problem once and for all, (b) load the ammo to the performance and recoil level you are comfortable with.

    My brother has a .41 in S&W and loves to shoot it. It is not perhaps as ubiquitous as the 44. mag or .357 mag. Also, probably not as versatile. I shoot a .45LC for sentimental reasons. (for plinking cowboy loads are good) Good hunting loads are also available. It is pure Americana....

    Is the .41 fun? Yes, and the recoil is not prohibitive.

    Thank you all for the replies you have been very helpful. I have found a .41 mag in Taurus model 425, 4" ported barrel, dont know if it is single or double action. New In Box price is $383. Is this a good firearm and is it in the same league as the ruger and S&W. BTW I forgot to mention that I reload so that would hopefully broaden the option for bullet selction.

    Is it in the same league? I would not say so. Each are in a league of there own with the common factor being the calibur. I still like the S&W Model 57. [8D]

    The Taurus is a double action and not in the same league as Ruger. Still they are good guns for the money and the price you quoted is about what I've seen them for. You'll definetly want to reload for economical reasons. A box (50) of lead SWC in my area runs $24 o $26. I can load them for $5 and jacketed for under $10. Though bullet selection is somewhat limited. Just a note: Rugers tend to have tight cylinders which can effect accuracy and leading and Taurus has had some QC problems in the past. Another thing about the Taurus revolvers is nobody really know to what level they can be loaded. From what I have heard they quote the SAMI specs of the weakest revolver the is loaded for. Many suggest the taurus guns can take loads somewhere in between there and Ruger levels but no one seems to know for sure.

    Ahhhh! Old subjects revisited! So, after all this advice (good) I might ask you.....what is the use to which you wish to put this hypothetical .41 magnum? If hunting or casual shooting I'd recommend the Ruger Blackhawk. Anything else, the Smith or Taurus.

    Hi Travis, here's another slant on the .41. I acquired a 3-screw Blackhawk quite a few years ago. I also shoot a Ruger .357 and a Redhawk .44 mag. I handload all 3 and used the .41 in handgun Silhouette matches. It is definitely a little more than the .357 but I believe quite easier to shoot than the Redhawk but I also don't have large hands. It is quite accurate at 100 meters. Either it or the Redhawk would be adequate for deer hunting. I have carried them both.

    I have been using the same Ruger Blackhawk(Liberty Model)for almost 30 years. Never a problem with it and it has had some pretty stiff loads through it. I have used the DE in 41 mag, the Marlin 1894 and the T/C Contender(which was eventually rechambered for the 411 JDJ). All have performed very well as hunting firearms.
