I'll take the Mossberg over the 870 any day. My Dad bought me my first Mossberg 500 for my 13th birthday (still have it) and I've many more since then. Inexpensive to buy, very reliable, cheap and easy to fix yourself when the need arises. Why do you think Mossberg makes replacement barrels for Remingtons??

Men, like bullets, go farthest when they are smoothest.

I am not certain what the 835 looks like but I am assuming it doesnt have the feed ramps or whatever you call them to help you load the magazine, I found it very difficult to load my mosberg 500 .410 when I was younger and sold it because of that. I duno but to me it has to have feed ramps to help load the mag otherwise I wont buy it.

I would say that Most any of the common names in shotguns, i.e. mossberg, remington, winchester, savage, all are good guns. I practically grew up with a remington rifle or shotgun in my hands. therefor, i have a special place in my heart for remingtons. however i have owned all of the above at one time or another and as far as shotguns go they were all really good guns. (oh yeah, i still own an ithica #37 and it is just as good as any) So, to answere your question try the mosberg and see how it fits you. every gun maker puts something a little diffrent in their gun. My ithica has bottom loading and bottom ejection, has less moving parts, making it lighter. many hand loaders like it because it drops the empties at your feet. remington's and perhaps others have a two guide bars on their pump actions, making them stronger. To me firearms are like art, everyone has their own taste and price range. mho

I have a preferance for the thumb safety, and I believe you can live with either gun, for the purposes you stated.
